    Task Manager's "App History" tab is empty. "No Data Available"


    Hi there,

    As mentionned in the title, I just noticed that the App History tab in Windows Task Manager is empty on my system.

    I used the Microsoft Upgrade assistant on 11/11 to get the latest update while clearing a few problems I had with my installation.

    The tab mentions the date, so I guess it did reset, but for a reason I ignore, it's plain empty, showing "No Data Available" instead of the app list.

    I'm trying to remember what I did beside the upgrade, except reinstalling a bunch of softwares, removing / disabling some UWP apps (Cortana might be related ?), I don't see anything that could have affected this feature.

    Windows Version:

    Windows 10 Pro 20H2 (64bits)
    19042.630
    Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.31.0

    Hi, you might try this fix, which should be equally applicable to Win 10:

    Hi ! Thanks for the fast answer !

    I forgot to mention it, I tried to search some informations on this(not many results actually), and saw this page.
    I did a scan, but no luck, problem's stil here.

    Yes, all steps done in order.

    Clicking on the delete link doesn't seem to do anything too, as there's no infos displayed on the tab, it's just like clicking on a link with no interaction possible.

    I don't know if this will help, but nothing ventured..
    Reset Task Manager to Default in Windows 10

    Do you know if this was working before the update?

    For your question, that's the problem: I did a clean install of Windows 10 about a month ago, went from Win 7 to Win 10 with a 2004 iso. New drive, new system, except my files and documents, everything was built from start, so I guess it was working, but I just noticed the problem right now, I'm not completely sure if it broke after the upgrade, or before because of something I did previously.

    Well, I just tried, restarted after adding the file, task manager size and preferences did reset, but still nothing in the App History tab.

    Unless someone has a precise suggestion, given you say you did make changes to some things, and you have no recourse to either a usable and applicable restore point or a disk image, you can try an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data.

    Tutorial available. This will also reset all services to default.

    However completing one with 20H2 may be problematic- see the comments following the tutorial on in-place upgrade (last pages) where a fix is posted. MS released an update which is supposed to have fixed that problem- it seems some find it has, some not.

    As this is app related, you could try
    Run Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter in Windows 10
    but it's a stab in the dark.

    I'll try to perform another Upgrade in the next days / weeks if we can't find a solution then, maybe the best option available.

    I was just thinking:
    - I've been removing some shortcuts past week (after my first upgrade) from start menu folders to get something clear & simple, I learned that way that removing / renaming the "startup" folder in:

    "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

    ... prevented the task manager to show any application in the startup tab - it shows just empty, like what's happening with my App History - yet the startup applications are still registered and working in that case, even if there's no shortcuts in that folder, It just has to be there for the task manager to display the applications correctly.

    By any chance, is it the same thing for the App History tab ? Perhaps it depends on a specific folder / windows app shortcut I removed or renamed ? That's the closest thing I can think of, but I might be wrong.

    Hi, you certainly shouldn't remove folders like that that that are expected to be there.

    No harm would be done by removing individual shortcuts though- they simply wouldn't appear in the start menu.

    From the sounds of it I'd guess you've messed something up. Before attempting an in-place upgrade repair install, try creating a new user for test puposes. Log in as that user, and see if you see the same issue with the task manager.

    If not, you've now a corrupt user proflle which an in-place upgrade repair install will not fix.

    If you wish to manipulate the content of your start menu, a good way is to download and install Open Shell (free) - a start menu which lets you access everything easily and intuitively, letting you delete things, move them by drag 'n drop, rename them, and rt click options give you access to the underlying folders. Even if you only use it to 'edit' the start menu (safely and conveniently) that's better.

    You may even come to prefer it- best of XP, Win 7 start menu features and customisable.

    With that installed you can still use Win 10's start menu of course.
