An application caused a problem with the default application...

    Greetings.

I did a reinstallation of windows 10. I downloaded the latest version, 20H2, and since the reinstallation this notification has appeared:

"an application caused a problem with the default application settings for files ..."

It has appeared to me 2 times, once for PDF files and once for HTML files.

Any idea why these notifications? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi, presumably you are seeing something like this:
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...c-709222a68a5e

"an app caused a problem with the default app setting for pdf files so it was reset to MS edge"

A Google search for that message yields plenty of suggestions, including this tenforums tutorial:
Fix An app default was reset Error in Windows 10

Hopefully this isn't another snag with 20H2, just another occurrence of an issue seen many times before,

Maybe it's a problem with the October updates.

I did the test by reinstalling the 2004 version and I also got the same two notifications, for PDF and HTML.

    Hello @Hijin25,
Describe your test to me and I can try it if you like. I have 2004 with October CU installed.

Was that a clean install rather than an in-place upgrade repair install, and have you tried the suggestions I posted?

It's not a new symptom though- been seen on older builds too. However, the new Edge is now in play of course.

Searches haven't shown this being commonly reported though.

I think it only happens in a clean installation, before doing the reinstallation I did not get that message after updating on October 13.

    It was a clean installation.

I have the disc with the 2004 version. I have not done the solution you recommend because although it is the same message, it is not the same case, I do not try to change the default application, so the message misses me even more.

What other software have you installed? This 'an app caused a problem with the default setting...' message can be triggered by 3rd-party apps that may use older unsupported methods of checking or setting their defaults. The fix is usually to install a newer updated version of the app.

Older versions of Irfanview were known to do this for example, VLC was another. Both are fixed in their later versions.

So far I have only installed autocad 2014 and libreoffice, but the message did not appear immediately after installing any of these programs.
