Filezilla concurrent copying on same Host - Forget File Explorer

    Hi folks

Just to remind people that if you like Filezilla (a load faster than file explorer by a mega factor) it will also much more securely copy files to HDD's / SDD's / directories on the SAME Host as well and it does concurrent transfers not just one at a time.

On the Remote site just enter sftp://localhost with username and password (or whatever your computer name is) and copy at will.

I'm currently on Linux but the GUI is identical on Windows. (For Windows the SENDING system - even if it's the same as the RECEIVING one must have openssh server enabled --it's part of Windows -just activate it from optional applications and programs).

Once you get used to this program you wont even want think of using file explorer ever again for copying large amounts of data !!!!

Since most files used by the newspaper are pdf or jpg and were uploaded from distant sites you can highlight
one or more Files to transfer not to just a drive but a folder with drag and drop.
with progress and failures unlike explorer a failure doesn't stop just skips the file and continues.
when transferring 100 files this is a necessity . failures can be listed so you can try again.

    Hi there
agreed -- all sorts of good things on this program and its entirely free !! Versions on Windows and Linux available. Not sure about (Cr)Apple / Android systems = I'm not transferring 1 TB of data files to / from a phone though !!!

Filezilla (a load faster than file explorer by a mega factor)
Compare pictures 2 and 3; although the speed is limited by "remote" hdd raid 1+0, explorer is significantly faster.

it will also much more securely copy files to HDD's / SDD's
Securely in which meaning??? Extra network layers prevent disk failures or what? Please elaborate this.

it does concurrent transfers not just one at a time
A few years ago this "feature" was removed from freecommander because of speed drop. Compare pictures 1 and 2.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Some specifications:
    - local data transfer speed is limited by disk subsystem; adding extra network layers & protocols can only slow it down
    - using filezilla requires ftp server (configured and running) or equivalent so another attack surface is in place
    - concurrent copying multiple files from/to spinning disk decreases overall throughput because of constantly moving heads
    - although not in explorer, there are ways to copy ntfs permissions (xcopy, freecommander); no way over ftp in Filezilla.

No reason to use Filezilla for copying files between local disks. I really don't understand why this thread was created.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Picture 1 - Filezilla concurrent copying - aggregated speed approx. 95 MB/s

    Picture 2 - Filezilla sequential copying - speed approx. 225 MB/s
Filezilla concurrent copying on same Host - Forget File Explorer-2.png

    Picture 3 - Explorer file copying - speed approx. 245 MB/s

I have both client and server. My main or data files are stored on my main computer where I can download them
    or send from
any of my other computers where ever I am at as well as NAT drives, and the cloud.
    Ease of access.
My brother can download files from me with ease where ever he is at as well.

    Compare subject of this thread:
Filezilla concurrent copying on same Host - Forget File Explorer
so your case is different from what I tested & what I'm talking about.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

To clarify MiB/MB confusion: yes, speed values are directly comparable.
    Mebibyte - Wikipedia
Some operating systems still compute file size in mebibytes, but report the number as MB (megabytes). For example, all versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system show a file of 2**20 bytes as "1.00 MB" or "1,024 KB" in its file properties dialog and show a file of 10**6 (1000000) bytes as 976 KB.
