Media Player won't play .wmv clips correctly

I have windows media player (MP) on a win10-2004 desktop that won't play .wmv clips correctly. VLC plays them fine, and the clips can be imported to a video editor and it plays them fine as well. So the problem appears to be with mp.

By won't play correctly, I mean that when the wmv clip is opened (rt-click on file, choose open or open with media player) the visual component in the UI is blank/black, but the audio is playing fine.
That same MP plays mp4/mod/mpg files correctly (visual and audio), and audio files in formats of mp3, wma, mid, wav also correctly.

So, what's wrong with MP that it won't play a wmv file?

screenshot of the MP user interface and details attached. In the screenshot, there 2 video clip icons, both mp4, and MP plays them both properly.

    Codec missing, see: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...eo-does-not-pl
Installing K-Lite Codec Pack probably will help.

A .wmv file can have a variety of video codecs and audio codecs used to create the video stream, as can most video file types, so you need to find out which codec is missing or load the file into an editor and render it out with a codec supported by MP.
Usually right clicking the file will give you the details such as video size, bitrate, encoding etc.
Agree with Piko, K-Lite's standard codec pack is excellent for adding the majority of unsupported codecs to Windows, is free, and I believe it also has an option for installing the older version of MP as well, which some people prefer, giving you a choice of which MP to use on a per video basis.

    Hi,
Thanks for the replies. And so far, not a success for mp. The details follow.

I followed the link from Piko to the MS advice: noted it was for v11, and I think I have v12 (details in image, prior post), but followed the advice there to identify codecs. And because of the version difference, that basic advice to download codecs just wasn't there. On to advanced: and I moved the wmv file that would not play into the videos area on the PC, so it would show with the others. And a properties look at that clip did not show any codecs. screenshot.

Aha! thinks I. But to check, did the same for the mp4 clips in the screenshot (they do play): and the same result. oops.

Googled k-lite, found it, downloaded and installed the standard pack. Took the advanced option just to install it in a custom location, and without an entry in the start menu, but otherwise accepted all the defaults. Screenshot of it in the programs & features page. Comment here: during install, when the green progress bar had reached the end, the desktop icons on screen did a lot (a lot!!) of flickering: on then off. First thought - it's hung somehow, but let it go and eventually, got the the finish panel (so I have no idea what the icon flickers were about).

Then ran the problem wildlife.wmv file in MP again - same result: screenshot.
Since K-Lite standard included a media player (123) I located it, created a shortcut, executed it and ran the same wildlife.wmv clip: played normally.

Conclusion: whatever is causing MP to not play wmv files correctly, it isn't for lack of a codec.
Still wondering about fixing MP if there is any follow up advice?

The prior advice was to load k-lite codecs, that would fix it. And k-lite had codecs for just about everything - I read thru the list, and that included wmv. But that didn't work for mp, altho every other player I have does work with wmv files.
So how would installing yet more codecs improve that situation??

The desktop icon flickering you noticed was just the new entries to the registry causing a refresh of the system, the same happens when you update Store apps sometimes, at times more noticeable than at others. There are some video codec implementations that some players just cannot use, non standard video bitrates, audio sampling, video frame size, compression standard, the list goes on. Just adding codecs may not cure the issue if the player just cannot use them, it is down to the players developers to add support. Sometimes that support is missing due to licencing concerns, deprecation, other reasons....
It is entirely possible you will never get MP v12 to play that file, but at least there are other options available.

I was coming to that conclusion. But - since others can do this and have done for years using the wmv format that MS 'owns' - shame on microsoft.

Thanks to all for the assist.

It is not the .WMV format that is the issue here, I could quite easily create a video using a standard audio codec but a VLC customised video codec, call it test.wmv, VLC would play it but MP v12 would not.
I am sure if you dig through the relevant MS Docs there is a format listed for how .WMV files should be formatted for use with Windows, if someone decides to veer from that format MS cannot be held responsible.

Have you run the WMP troubleshooter?
    Start Menu,
    Windows system,
    Control panel,
set 'View by' to Large/Small icons so you can see everything,
    Troubleshooting,
    View all,
    WMP settings.
