    My Phone Explorer connecting advice

Now that at long last I have got YourPhone working (still not everything) I am not all that impressed with it, so far, though I understand more development is planned. I have decided to try the Your Phone Explorer alternative but am having great difficulty with getting it to connect. It says my phone is protected by a PIN which I must enter ---- every PIN I try is rejected. I try the PIN used with my phone's Lock Screen, my PC Windows account, and any others I can think of (apart from my bank). I have asked for help in the program's forum, but support in English is I understand, somewhat limited.

Is there someone here who uses MyPhoneExplorer able to suggest how I might get this issue resolved? I have seen it recommended on this site.

    I use MyPhoneExplorer.

I assume you have already installed the phone's driver on your computer.

Run the MyPhoneExplorer client on your Android and, in its user interface, click on Settings. There's a setting for a WiFi PIN. I have always kept this clear and suggest that you do the same [at least until you are familiar enough with it to want to experiment].
    1 Click on its icon

    2 Click on Settings

    3 Click on WiFi PIN

4 Clear the WiFi PIN & click on OK

I would be interested in seeing a screenshot of that "protected by a PIN" message because I have never seen it.

MyPhoneExplorer links Windows computers & Android phones reliably

It was probably my recommendation that you saw. The text that follows has been improved beyond what you saw before.

Whether the computer & the phone are linked by USB, Bluetooth, WiFi network or the phone's WiFi hotspot, MyPhoneExplorer links them reliably and it contains highly customisable synchronisation tools.

    1 Install your phone's driver
Check your phone maker's website for a Windows 10 driver, possibly described as a Windows 10 USB driver. You install this on the computer not the phone.
    - For HTC, I think the driver was in an obvious place within the website support section.
    - For Samsung, I think I had to ask them where I could find the driver.
I've always just installed the driver straightaway on any new phone so I don't know what happens without a driver.

2 MPE installation & guidance I always connect, for the first time, by USB cable to keep things simple.
    - The driver will let Windows 10 detect it properly [it might call it a phone, it might call it a portable media player].
    - It will have a decent icon in Devices & printers and in File explorer. Device manager will probably identify it as a mobile phone.
    - You will not have or need an Eject command, you just disconnect it when you know you are not transferring any data.
    - It might have other benefits such as better speed for all I know,

    3 Transferring data
MPE is very useful for transferring data between your phone & your computer.
    - I have been using it for eight years now and I think it is excellent.
    - I use it to sync [MS Office] Outlook Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes to the phone. I could sync both ways but I choose not to.
    - I use it to move the phone's photos & screenshots to the computer.
    - I also use it to copy chosen files to the phone and other chosen files from the phone.
    - All these operations are defined in advance & saved within the application so I can just tell it to get on with the job {by clicking on a single command} whenever I want.

4 Backing up, transferring & restoring MPE
Both your MPE setup choices & your sync definitions are saved in C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\MyPhoneExplorer
    - They can be backed up from there.
    - They can be restored to there should the need arise.
    - They can also be copied to another computer to avoid having to work through setting up more than one of them.

Brilliant! Ten minutes after after reading the latest thread I had established contact between my PC and MPE and started checking out the many useful services it provides. Thankyou very much!

Hello again --- I have hit a problem. I cannot launch MPE because I get Run-time error 7: out of memory. I have started reading about it but it seems somewhat complicated, with a large number of possible causes. I know it is unlikely to have anything to do with RAM, it even happens when usage is as low as 34%. So far it has only happened with MPE and every time, Can you help?

I have never seen this error.

    These suggestions are just ideas

1 Since you started off saying you had "established contact between my PC and MPE and started checking out the many useful services it provides" I wonder if you have since altered anything to do with the connection type [USB / WiFi hotspot / WiFi network / ...].

2 In the instructions listed in that MPE forum link, have you done the procedure in the line "ATTENTION: On Android 4.2.2 and newer the USB-Debugging option is hidden, here is a tutorial how to unlock USB-Debugging for this devices:"? Here's a direct link to the right page in their forum -
How to use MyPhoneExplorer with an Android Device - MPEForum
    {I've now added this link to the earlier post because I realised that I had referred to it within a general MPE forum link as just some sort of 'info' link even though it was crucial}

3 Connect the phone by USB and check it appears as a drive in File explorer & that you can browse it [you don't need MPE for this to work and any problems would probably mean the correct driver had not been installed]

4 Do you get the same error if the phone is disconnected [i.e. it is a problem on the computer rather than between the computer & the phone]?

5 Does the phone's MPE client start running when you try to run MPE on the computer? Does Google PlayStore show that it needs updating? We used to have to start it separately but mine just starts automatically these days.

6 Do you get the same error whether it is a WiFi connection or USB connection? Or have you only tried USB so far?

    I will start with 3 and 6

"3.Connect the phone by USB and check it appears as a drive in File explorer & that you can browse it [you don't need MPE for this to work and any problems would probably mean the correct driver had not been installed]"

I presume you mean it should show up in the same way a Flash Drive does? It does not. But does it require OTG? I have OTG adapters to connect Flash Drives to the phone, but not an OTG cable for the PC, so I must get one. I used to connect via a cable to my Windows phone, but that did not support OTG. I often found it useful. If for some reason connecting phone and PC with a cable does not work I cannot use that method to connect with MPE.

"6. Do you get the same error whether it is a WiFi connection or USB connection? Or have you only tried USB so far?" As follows from 3, I have only connected with WiFi, not with USB.

I hope this makes sense to you! Despite what might be concluded from my response to 3. above, the PC did connect with the phone at the beginning, for about a day --- so it should be connecting now. Tomorrow I will try your other suggestions.

3 I have never understood what OTG is. It seems to me to be a fancy way of distinguishing between a cable/connector that is power-only and a cable/connector that can pass data.
    - I have never found a cable that failed to allow data to be passed between my phone & my computer.
    - The only time I have had to be careful is when I have bought USBC-USBA & uUSB-USBA adapters. Not all of them allowed data to pass [but most did].
    - When I connect my phone to my computer by USB cable, I get the standard doo-do-do-whopp sound. I don't have to tell the phone to do anything [I think I used to on earlier Android versions. I'm on Android 10.]
    - This is what my phone ["Handiest"] looks like in File explorer when I connect it by USB cable. I can browse its contents just as I can browse any other drive. Note that File explorer calls it a media player; that does not create any problem.
    My Phone Explorer connecting advice-handiest-conencted-usb-copy.png
    - I would be amazed if the USB charging cable supplied with your phone was not also able to carry data.
    - I think your driver has not been successfully installed. Mine shows up in several places in Device mgr but this is just an example [I think that my earlier phones had different entries].

6 If you get it working through its WiFi hotspot, across your WiFi network or by bluetooth then that is success. I'm only banging on about USB because I thought it was the simplest method.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

I have now got the phone to connect to PC by USB cable (the second one I tried). In the phone it now says plugged in but (you wont be surprised) it also says 'USB Debugging disabled!' So I suppose I am going to have to try enabling Developer mode. I have always kept clear of this, it looks complicated and risky, but I have not had the need before now. MPE should make it worthwhile, if I can get it working. I will take my time with it, maybe tomorrow.

I also now have the MPE app on my Android Galaxy Tablet but it has not opened. I have not got much beyond the message saying 'waiting for connection'. WiFi connection is shown as active, with the PIN for it, Bluetooth is not 'bonded' (meaning paired?) but USB has been very troublesome with connection going on and off. This I have identified as a poor physical connection between port and cable plug and I have just found a better adapter so might get better results tomorrow. It is worth noting that I have not been getting the ERROR notification which I get on the PC.
