    Run a program at startup

    Greetings,

I already tried asking this in Microsoft Answers.

I would like to have a command script (.cmd) run automatically, making sure:

    1. The program doesn't start until the user logs in
    2. The program doesn't start for other users

I thought I could use this startup folder:

    %appData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

But the behavior seems to have changed. In the past the items in shell:Startup ran when I logged in, but now they run at startup (before I log in). Also, in previous versions of Windows this folder was full of items, but now it is empty.

How can I make a program run when I log in (not before)?

    Thanks,
    Shane.

Hi, consider using a scheduled task with an appropriate trigger.

I figured out what changed. There is a new option called "Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device and reopen my apps after an update or restart" which is turned on by default. Since this was added, items in shell:Startup run at startup (not when the user logs in). Also, tasks which are scheduled to run when the user logs in actually run at startup.

You're probably thinking that I can fix this by turning off this option. However, I like what it does and I would like to keep in on. So, I was wondering if there is another way to get a program to run when the user logs in (not before).

    Thanks,
    Shane.

    Thank you for your reply.

You will need to research scheduled task triggers yourself. I don't use that option.

e.g. have you chosen specific user?

I was wondering whether you would like to be so kind as to consider the possibility of taking a look at the screenshot in post #3.

    What do you mean?
That's a very abrupt question. And thank you for your reply.

Copy the program shortcut into this folder:

    C:\Users\USER-NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

"USER-NAME" is the name of the User you wish to start this program at logon

I think "at startup" is not exactly the same as "at log on".
