    Set WordPad as default

That worked fine BUT when I reopened the document I was experimenting with it opened in Microsoft WORD by Default - having closed that I was able to then search for the file and then reopen - by right clicking and instructing the PC to open another app as WORDPAD was not automatically offered.

i am not clear how to set things so that by defauklt the document automatically opens in WORDPAD.

maybe I will get a response here or can have another search another time - for now I have found aw ay to achieve it that is good enough at least for the time being.

I propose to use WORDPAD as my note making progamme for the time being rather than NOTEPAD and see ho I get on with it.

thank you for this tutorial - I am sorry if my notes here make little sense - I do not need a detailed response.

    Hello Andrew,

If you like, you could use the "Open with" context menu like in option 2 of the tutorial below to set WordPad as the default app to always open the file type with.

I am not sure I understand teh "open with context" idea but I shall take a look.

meanwhile I recall what I did before some long time ago and even found the template I set up - which had the font I choose and size - so I can revert to doing that - just a dam shame I do not rememeber this stuff very well.

But thank you very much and for being so prompt.

You can use Wordpad for txt and rtf for example, not for doc, docx of course.

Using Open With to set default requires you to check the box 'Always use this app...' at the bottom of the Open With context menu as per the tutorial. That takes a couple of steps before it is presented.

That's not the only way to set defaults of course.
