stop W10 from aking me to make apps default for file type

I upgraded to 10 from 7 a month or 2 ago and i keep getting prompts when i open certain files asking me to choose a program to be the default for that file type. It of course has the checkbox that asks me if i want to always use the app i choose. But like typical windows it never works. Yeah, it works for a bit then a few days or weeks later i try and open the file type again and get the prompt again even tho i checked the box last time it asked. I dunno if they have chimps designing windows or what but this is getting extremely frustrating ! How hard can i be to make that checkbox do what it's supposed to?

Generally when one has files they have to be associated with a program that created them. The extension of the file name is a clue as is the list of programs installed.

    1. Click 'Start' and type 'Default apps'
    2. Click 'Default Apps'
    3. Click 'Choose Default app by file type'
    4. Find the file type you want to set the default for, for example .PDF. Scroll down to the .PDF and click on it and choose from the options give.
    5. Default set. Works everytime.

I did that after googing the issue. It didn't work for me. I'm pretty sure thats because it's the exact same function as the checkbox in the prompt i get, just a different way of getting to it.
I think Berton is onto the issue tho,.....the main one, possibly the only one that keeps doing it is a office like free app that i unistalled after getting rid of MS office. The files were created with office and the new app works fine but keeps asking now and then as i said. Any way to fix this short of making all new files with the new app?

I know sometimes with certain file types I can not do this via Settings, but only by using the Right Click > Open With > Choose another app* > More apps* > Find another app on this PC path.

Then check the box 'Always Use this app to open .xyz files'.

Often I'll have to do this process twice for it to stick.

*Depending on the number of choices. you might have scroll down to see these prompts.

Please post one or more screenshots thus:

    - illustrate the prompt/dialogue box, the file type involved, and show what it's associated with - if anything.

Easier to answer specific questions with exact facts. Thanks.

Do you have this check box available in the Open With dialogue?

Which box are you referring to - the one I've shown or another?
has the checkbox that asks me if i want to always use the app i choose.
