photos displayed as photos not as Mspaint icons

Whatever view setting I select (Extra Large Icons, Tiles, ...) the Windows Explorer is showing every single picture (JNGP, PNG, ..) as icons, like icons for MSPaint, or Windows Foto

I've changed the "open with" application, but it just switches to the icon of the corresponding application ...

.. and I want to have the picture on my screen (in small format obviously).

My Windows 7 machine just does that ... but it doesn't work here. What is wrong ?

You have to adjust the change from default apps. Take this clear example.

Hello MMMonzaSoxedo, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Double check to make sure you have thumbnail previews turned on.

    Option #1 did the trick

But I see option #3 as a cool option to not having to go through Windows setting after every update or whatever.
I guess somebody will have some script to also enable Windows Explorer to show file extensions, and to not hide system files (or any file actually), as this setting is being set to the wrong mode at least since Windows 7

To show the extensions you are also in the same section of File Explorer option 1, Hide extensions for known file types.

That is unrelated to the problem

    Here you go:
