    Please make Cortana stop!

    Hi everyone,
I have tried, Spydish, Debotnet, O&O Shutup10 and a random Uninstall Cortana.cmd. to stop/delete Cortana. I also disable it in Task Manager. Each time I reboot, the bloody thing is back using 21% of my CPU. I have the latest 10 update as of 21.07.2020 Is there a soulution to completely removing it? I don't mind having to do it again following an update. Many thanks.

Hi, I simply disable 'Hey Cortana' in Settings. Resource use 0.
(Can still invoke Cortana with Win key C - I use it for reminders).

However there is this for example, which also gives ways to disable it:
    Cortana Uses 30% CPU

You might check to see if this is related to an update you have installed, and consider uninstalling the update and hiding (blocking) it.

Please confirm your current Windows build number.

    Also note (older report):

Microsoft Release Update To Fix Cortana CPU Core Bug

In a report via DSOGaming, Microsoft has confirmed the release of the fix (along with some other minor fixes and security updates) that will now ensure that Cortana isn’t a core-devouring monster on your system!

“Windows Desktop Search may not return any results and SearchUI.exe may have high CPU usage after installing KB4512941.
Fixed on Sept 10: Addresses an issue that causes high CPU usage from SearchUI.exe for a small number of users. This issue only occurs on devices that have disabled searching the web using Windows Desktop Search.

    Hi there
I really LOATHE these voice activated things --the latest horror being Amazons Voice search Alex or whatever it is called where you have to scream at your TV to change a channel etc -- the only time I scream at a TV is watching football (the proper version with the round ball - not the squashed rugby ball thing) and somebody does something stupid like miss a penalty !!. -- That's an 11 Metre Free kick in front of the Goal with only the Goal keeper allowed to stop the ball -- for some of our USA colleagues who probably think "Football" is another game entirely.

As Dalchina says simply disable it -- also if installing / re-installing windows you can skip all the voice activated bits when you are asked those endless questions just before the initial boot at install time.

    Cheers

Cortona is tied into so many other apps as well as the OS itself. I would suggest goiing into settings and privacy and turn off all background apps that you don't need or use. I only have 2 apps enabled at startup.

Also check taskmanager for startup software and disable as needed.

Thanks everyone, sounds like I’m stuck with it as I did select everything I could to off at installation, also have shut down virtually all other useless apps. Also, I only have 4 things running at startup & one of those is my security software. Damn I hate Windows 10 😖

Thank you for your reply. Consider when this problem started. Was it indeed triggered by an update? See my post above, wiht a link including possible ways of disabling Cortana (which shouldn't be necessary, bar MS bugs).

I suppose you've stopped Cortana running at log-in in Apps & features, Cortana, advanced options?

    @shipwreck

I used a combination of WinAero Tweaker (free) and Revo Uninstaller (free), to... easily stop Cortana.

    Also consider these options:

    tenforums tutorials| enable-disable-cortana-windows-10
I recommend option 2 - with reg file

    As noted in tutorial..
This will only enable or disable Cortana the personal assistant, and not the Cortana process (SearchUI.exe) used by Windows Search.

Thanks again everyone, I have Revo but the Cortana app isn’t listed. I have tried several commands within Powershell and of course the three programs mentioned. I also tried what was suggested in the pinned note. I am away from the computer now until Thursday morning, will then try WinAero. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions. Wish me luck!
