    MSWMM Files

    Version: Windows 10 Professional 64-bit.

Before I posted this, I did some extensive researching, even on this forum, and come to find out that it's almost impossible to open old MSWMM files in the current day using Windows 10 (Microsoft Windows Movie Maker files). I have a bunch of movie projects saved in an old drive that I still would like to be able to access and use.

Up until about three years ago it seems, you could still install Windows Movie Maker 6, and be able to use it in Windows 10 at the time. Last night I tried just that, but kept getting this error message (attached) when I opened the program, so obviously it's not compatible anymore.

Any solutions to be able to open these files and use them again?

This is what you are asking about and I think there will be an issue since Microsoft discontinued the Media Center of previous WIndows:
MSWMM File - What is it and how do I open it?
Tip: always give the full name before using an Acronym the first time so everyone knows what is meant.

Thanks, and that's what I thought. It's crazy how Microsoft would leave everyone out in the cold with Movie Maker files. I have projects saved that I would love to be able to open up and edit again.

Thank you, but that one won't install at all.

That's a 'busy' site, little difficult to see the right download button, but got a backup copy, about 134MB in about a minute with a 25Mbps 'net connection.

The Movie Maker in Windows Essentials 2012 may be too new for the OP's purposes. Windows Live Movie Maker 2012 can only open MSWMM projects created by Movie Maker 6.0 (first available for Vista). If the OP's MSWMM project files were created in Movie Maker 2.1 (XP) or 2.6 (Vista) then the cannot be opened by Windows Live Movie Maker.

They can be opened in WMM 6.0, then saved as a 6.0 format MSWMM file. That could then be opened by Windows Live Movie Maker.

    More here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...4-616b6c7ecf9c

If @FullGrownNut has a Windows 7 machine available WMM 6.0 could be installed on that to do the conversion from 2.1/2.6 format to 6.0 format.

As the OP's specs say they have W10 Pro I would suggest trying a virtual machine, but for a W7 Hyper-V VM the sound card would not be available unless you could run a W7 VM in Enhanced Mode. For that to be possible it has to be created as a gen. 2 VM. WMM won't run if there's no sound card.

I've just installed WMM 6.0 in W10 2004 and yes, I get that same error. But click OK and the Windows Media player closes, leaving an apparently fully functional WMM 6.0. Whatever the Media Player's problem is, it doesn't seem to stop Movie Maker 6 from working normally. Here it is having opened one of my old XP WMM 2.1 MSWMM projects.

And having saved that project as a new 6.0 MSWMM project, I have confirmed that it can then be opened in Windows Essentials 2012 Movie Maker.
