Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?

Hi, I'm new to Windows 10 and haven't been able to make sense of its Start menu, so I just installed Open Shell.

The default Start menu has white letters on a black background, which is hard on my aging eyeballs. I'd like to change it to black letters on a light gray background.

I right clicked on the Start button, and then clicked Settings and entered "start menu colors" in the search box, but got nothing.

So I tried searching for "color" and got this:
Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?-open-shell-color-setting-dialogue-box.jpg

I've tried to change the "Menu Glass Color" (whatever that is) to D3D3D3, or to Invert Metro icon color, but the Start menu remains unchanged.

I'd be grateful if someone could point me to instructions for making my start menu look like the Start menus in Windows 98SE, XP and Windows 7.

Just use a color picker to get the color codes that you'd like.

Here's mine but I'm missing the text color option. I changed background to blue.

    How about this?

Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?-gray.jpg

You can get that from here:

Classic Shell • View topic - Gray Classic (Windows7 style)

Just drop it the Skins folder.

Thought I'd better check in to let you know that I'm still alive and kicking.

I"m in my late 70s and have chronic health problems that sometimes incapacitate me for days and even weeks at a time, making it difficult for me to sit up at my PC for more than a few minutes at a time. I'm in what I hope is the tail end of one of those spells and I hope that in a few days I'll be able to pick up this thread where we left off and make a little more progress in getting comfortable with Windows 10.

Many thanks to all of you who have offered suggestions, and thanks for your patience.

No worries. Just pick a skin (download one) and drop it into the skins folder.

Hi Callender, This morning I monkeyed around in Open-Shell and somehow managed to come up with a passable Start Menu that looks like this:

Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?-windows-7-start-menu-lenny.jpg

That's a great improvement. Now if only I could get the 3-D effect separators like on my Windows 7 PC:

Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?-windows-7-start-menu-bob-2.jpg

And darken the gray just a bit. But can hear you saying "Picky! Picky! Picky!"?

So for now, I think I have a found a usable Start Menu, and can refocus my attention on trying to get my PCs integrated into a network, so I can begin transferring all my work over from my old PCs to my new Windows 10 PC.

Thanks for being so attentive and patient. I really appreciate it.

P.S. One more thing just occurred to me. I imagine that I may run into a situation when I may need to revert to the default Windows 10 Start Menu, in order to follow a set of troubleshooting instructions I find on the web. Is there a way to quickly switch back and forth between the Open-Shell Start Menu and the Default Windows 10 Start Menu?

I can't figure out how to edit my post to insert a missing character. Perhaps there's a time limit for editing?

Anyway, I left out the letter "I" in the above sentence 'can hear you saying "Picky! Picky! Picky!"?'

I should have typed 'can I hear you saying "Picky! Picky! Picky!"?'

There should be an option to show Windows Start Menu:

Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?-start-menu.jpg

If you choose "Classic Style" then it does not display so try one of the other two styles:

Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?-styles.jpg

Or if you want to stick with Classic Style then configure what opens when you press something:

Open Shell: Change Start Menu Colors?-settings.jpg

Other option is right click the Start Button (bottom left of screen) and choose "Exit"

Then you should get the original Windows 10 Start menu.
