As far as VLC, the desktop version is the best player. MPC-HC is pretty good, but not as good as VLC, plus VLC has a lot of apps that can hook into it for control or content, like VLC Streamer and VLC Remote for both Droid and iOS. MPC-HC has no remotes or other helper apps, VLC can play any content from any location, can stream Subtitles, sorry, VLC kicks arse..

Unless you are thinking of the VLC for Windows 10 app, which is better than the one they made for 8, but it still sucks. No, stick with the Desktop Versions, always.

Links? LOL Personal experience is all that's needed.

I play DVDs in VLC all the time, not only will it play DVDs well, you can just DROP the DVD ISO image into the player and it opens right up. I use VLC Remote to access the Menus and Controls.

Just type "VLC" into your browser search, and the site comes right up.

In place Upgrade from Windows 8.1 with Media Center gets you Windows DVD Player immediately.
Any DVD's your hardware is capable of, but audio is missing from some DVD's.

Agreed. MPC-HC is great for video files, and I have it set as my default for just about anything. But there are some DVDs that freeze the program for who knows what reason, and in Windows 7, WMP was my savior when that happened.

As far as I can see Windows DVD player will only open disks from a drive. It came free with my Windows 7 home premium upgrade, I have no use at all for it, VLC can be set to deinterlace everything as default setting or automatic.

Yeah but I don't want it to deinterlace everything... it'll lower the quality if you try to deinterlace a non-interlaced video. I only want it to deinterlaced videos that need it!

There's no "detect if it's required" option, which is what bothers me. MPC does it automatically.

Also, Windows 10 has built-in ISO mounting. If you rip your DVDs as ISO files, you should be able to double click them and it'll work...
