On my old spare laptop, which only had a very small hard drive, I created a folder on my C:\ drive, called it ED (external drive) and somehow had it linked to the programs I’d installed on my large capacity thumb drive, e,g Dropbox and OneDrive.
i want to do this on another laptop and just cannot remember how I did it!
can anyone help, please?

It sounds like you were using a Mount point.
First, create an empty folder on your hard disk. Open Disk Management. Locate the partition on your thumb drive. Right-click it and choose Change drive letter and paths.
Remove the drive letter for the thumb drive. Select Change drive letter and paths again, select Add, but this time rather than adding a drive letter choose Mount in the following empty NTFS folder and point it to the empty folder on the HD.
