Windows "cannot find" programs from Task Bar

After a recent Windows 10 update (current version is 10.0.18363 Build 18363) and some serious "housecleaning", several program links on my Task Bar became inoperable, returning messages like this:
Windows "cannot find" programs from Task Bar-qb-error-task-bar.jpg
Even going to the .exe file in the Programs folder and double-clicking it directly returns a similar message as does locating a file created by the program and double-clicking that. I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

    some serious "housecleaning"
Not sure what that entails. If e.g. that includes using a registry cleaner (don't!) then I'd simply suggest you look to see what System Restore points you have available and use one of those to get back to a good state. (I have one created on a schedule daily).

If you've followed the oh so oft-repeated advice many members give to use disk imaging regularly and routinely, then you can restore an appropriate recent disk image of Windows. (E.g. Macrium Reflect - free/paid).

Thanks, dalchina, for the reply. My recent housecleaning included both registry cleaning and, unfortunately, deletion of older system restore points such that the only one remaining was too recent to be of help. I also "cleaned" Windows restore files on the SSD, but do have same on a flash drive if it comes to that.

I was able to repair several programs' Task Bar functionality by following advice on another forum to delete the program's entry in the Windows Registry and then uninstall and reinstall the program. I'm hoping to avoid having to reinstall QuickBooks Accountant, but may go that route as I don't see any other option at this point.

I've only done disk imaging when upgrading a hard drive but never on a regular backup basis. Guess it would be a good idea!

Some registry cleaners keep a backup which you coudl restore, but it seems too late for that.
Basically you've gone some way along the path towards cutting your own throat- or is burning bridges a more apt analogy.

What you refer to as 'taskbar functionality' is simply a shortcut to the program.

See if the program runs from the start menu.

I think your first course would be to see if you can simply reinstall programs you've broken as you have been.

Delete /unpin any broken shortcuts. You can recreate them if you want to.
