Change a default file type back to 'Choose a default'

    WIN10, Version 2004, Build 19041-264
I have accidentally changed a file default and I want to change it back to 'Choose a default'. I have already tried 'reset' defaults but it will not change the default. Can you please help.

Hi, please see options here (noting the first one, as it says, is no longer compatible with Win 10):
7 Ways To to Remove a File Extension Association in Windows • Raymond.CC

    More:
Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

In the discussion following the tutorial you will find examples of people asking for a way to unassociate particular file types. For these, reg files have been provided.

Hi Matthew: Sorry for the late response. The file extension is: .FAB I don't believe that file extension is one of Microsoft's original extensions. It got added too my system because of a quilting program. Thanks

Hi Dalchina: Sorry for the late response. A couple of questions about your suggested solution. The file type association that I screwed up is not part of Microsoft's Windows 10 (I think that is correct). The .FAB file extension got added by a quilting program that was installed. If I use your solution, a) will the defaults that are repaired be only the original Microsoft file type extensions, leaving the .FAB as it is, or will it wipe it out completely and not replace it with anything. b) If it is wiped out completely, then I assume it will get added back the first time I use the quilting program, only with the 'Choose a Default' as it originally was. What do you think? Thanks again for your help.

Well, the point is that you have plenty of examples to follow.

For example here's one for file type json from Brink's post:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    ; Created by: Shawn Brink
    ; https://www.tenforums.com
; Tutorial: Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10 | Tutorials

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.json]

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.json]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.json]
Now you are interested in FAB

So if you were to change json to FAB in the above, that should work for you.

As ever, create a backup before making changes.
