    Still can't keep any installed programs as defaults


    Hope everyone here is doing well. So I'm on 1903...by choice (using SledgeHammer to disable any updates/upgrades until I want to do it) and I still can't keep any programs I installed as default. I even uninstalled the corresponding apps to see if the program I'm replacing it with will stick but still no avail. Example...I removed MAIL & CALENDAR app and installed Thunderbird and set it as my default mail application...and even went through SET DEFAULTS BY APP to associate everything email related to Thunderbird but as soon as I reboot I get a notification that there was a problem and it resets to...NOTHING...since the stock MAIL & CALENDAR app was removed by me, it just doesn't associate anything email related to no app/program. Same thing happened when I installed Nomacs Image Lounge...I uninstalled the windows PHOTO app and set Nomacs to default and the same thing happened as I described earlier. So now when I double click any image it does not open any program/app to view it. I have to right click and OPEN WITH>... I'm sorry if you note that this been discussed before on other threads but they were old and it showed really no conclusion and I know a lot of us are having the same issue. I'm just hoping someone has found some type for solution. Thank you!

    Hi, understand the frustration - and like you I'm on 1903 for now.

    as soon as I reboot I get a notification that there was a problem
    - one reason for this for several people was using an old version of a 3rd party program. One typical example was Winzip. I recall there was another. So those threads were resolved.

    I can't recall if there was any message though.

    I suggest you look at any older or less common 3rd party program that might associate itself with many file types, and consider uninstalling it to test this.

    You can also check whether your default selection has been written to the registry using this free program:

    Here are two views showing Xnview set as default for jpg.

    Simply hit refresh (F5) to reread the registry.

    History: (so often omitted by posters)
    - how long have you had this problem?
    - what happened immediately before it started?
    - if recently, do you have System Restore point you could use?

    Thank you for your reply! I just got a chance today to check out what you suggested. My biggest culprit is Firefox...which I always keep updated to the latest version. I still use Thunderbird as my stand-alone email client...been using it for years so I just can't let go but even though Mozilla is not really a part of it anymore, it still keeps ups with regular updates. As for Nomacs Image Lounge, the last update was March 2020 so I would not considered "old" but then again I'm not sure how Windows determines that. It just such a nuisance that those three are not my defaults.
    So after running FilesTypeMan I noticed that under the .jpg extension on the Edit File Type it shows the remnant of the deleted Windows Photo app (if I had to guess) for the User Choice (see pic). The same for Thunderbird and then for any browser-related extension it just goes back to Edge...all after just rebooting. The funny thing is that I use Pot Player for my media player and that sticks (doesn't switch to WMP). This been going on for a long while now. Can't remember when I even noticed. I just haven't really tried to solve the problem...and yeah I dont use restore points (is currently disabled) because I don't think I ever had an issue that a restoring it to a previous point has fixed. Gonna go to my Windows Apps folder to clean out the remnants of those deleted apps to see what happens.

    This should not be necessary- that's protected for good reason. If you used the appropriate powershell commands to remove apps that should be enough. However I don't know what would happen if they are set as default and then removed, for example. Any relics of that are nothing to do with what's in that folder, but are dependent on what's in the registry.

    I use FF and Tbird- no issues with default progs with them.

    If I set Paint as default for jpg I see
