Windows prompts to set default program, every time I update MPC-BE

    Win 10 Home x64 1909.18363.836

    Hello all!

New to Win10, and quite a few little 'quirks' I've yet to be able to resolve myself, so, I'll be posting here on occasion until I get everything sorted to my liking. One at a time, of course!

    Today's major frustration:

I use MPC-BE as my primary video player. This program updates as frequently as daily. Every time I update it, Windows prompts me to chose my default programs. This app is already selected as default for most/all video types. I don't see the familiar 'always' box when prompted. How do I get Windows to stop pestering me, every time I update this program?

    Thanks as always for reading,

Hi, could you post a screenshot of what you're seeing?

That Windows is prompting you to select default programs suggests the program is doing something it really shouldn't. Perhaps it's update procedure includes what is normally done on uninstalling one... removing its associations. If so, that's abnormal, and Windows is just reacting to it. E.g vlc player updates don't cause that to happen.

Tried asking them? Doesn't seem obvious:

Unfortunately, this project hasn't indicated the best way to get help. Check out the other support options below. Other Ways Of Getting Help

There is a ticket system- not clear how to sign up to create one.

Want relief from the updates? Perhaps you could stop ET calling home and block the program using Windows Firewall.

Looking at the site, it says 'Last update 2 hrs ago' - which appears to refer to the program, not the site.

Next time you run an update, before playing a video, check these settings ....

Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Video player

Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Choose default application by file type > (check the settings for some video file extension types)

Open the program's settings > is there an option to select file associations?

I'm inclined to agree with dalchina above. Appears very much like MPC-BE is the problem, not Windows 10.

I know what you're saying/meaning here, but need to check how you're getting to this point - detailed steps, please?

Upon next update, I will do screenshots.

I've used MPC-BE since the MPC-HC project officially ended, and I never had the issue since going from Win7 to Win10. Of course, it certainly can be coincidental timing, a problem that's started occurring on in the last week's builds, but that seems unlikely.

    Process steps:

    1) Download latest nightly build from here: MPC-BE 1.5.4 / 1.5.5 Beta Free Download - VideoHelp
    2) unpack to my saved apps folder
    3) install, without changing any settings (including not checking the reset settings box)
    4) This window pops up

where, as you can see MPC-BE is already selected as default.

    Again, thanks for reading!
