Burning to cd

It is not a Windows 10 problem and yes, Windows Media Player plays CD's very well. I think you need a different "computer person".

Rocky, I've not installed any software since getting Windows 10. With 7, all I had to do was to insert a cd/dvd into the disc slot and it played. Also I could burn stuff to cd using WMP. Now nothing plays when I put a disc in and WMP asks me to connect a burner when I try to burn to cd from the library. Sorry if this sounds childish but I'm no computer expert.
When I open Device Manager and click on disc drives I get the following, which mean nothing to me.
Generic compact flash usb device
Generic MS/MS pro usb device
Generic SD/MMC usb device
Generic SM/xd picture usb device
ST500DM002 - IBD142 ATA device
All of these show working correctly.
Hope all this means something. I'm tempted to go back to 7 but if the above is of help in sorting my problem out I'll stick with 10. Thanks in advance for your continuing help.

You don't look under Disk Drives. There should be another entry called DVD/CD-ROM drives. If there isn't, then the drive is not being recognized for some reason. That happened to me once and there was a simple fix for it that I can't recall at the moment. I'll have to look it up.

The fix involved editing registry keys. I'm not sure if you feel comfortable doing this.

You might try this; Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager, uninstall both ATA channel 0 and ATA channel 1, then reboot and let Windows reinstall them. That might work.

I would try this first though. It's copied from another thread here where someone else was having the same problem.

1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator.

2. Copy/type the following and enter

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

3. Reboot the system

It worked for the one who posted it and for a couple of others as well.

Do a rightclick on the Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator".

Wow, that was easy. What exactly does that command do? Paranoid or what!

It registers whatever drive is connected to that controller on the motherboard. It adds a registry entry that doesn't do any harm if it doesn't work.

So the problem is fixed? I am glad.

Unfortunately, the 'wow' was for finding out how to get Command Prompt Administrator. However, Rocky showed me how to use it but sadly, the path wasn't recognised so no further forward but at least the command didn't hurt the PC. My computer man was no help so I guess I'll have to live without a DVD drive until you nice people on the forum might come up with some more suggestions.

Did you try uninstalling the two things from device manager?(ATA Channel 0 and ATA Channel 1) There also may be a listing for an Unknown Device. If so, uninstall that too. Then reboot.
