Need to make Skype work for my handicapped/non-verbal daughter.

She is in a rehab facility for a pressure wound due to an ill-fitting wheelchair. For the first 5 months, 26 days, I was with her from 8:15 am until 7:30 pm every day. That's when the Governor shut down all visitations. I understand. But because she can't move herself, I would reposition her every hour and a half so she would stay comfortable. Now that I'm not there, the CNAs are so overworked that they don't have time to keep her like she should be.

I've been working on getting a computer for her so I can Skype her 24 hours a day. I can talk the CNAs through how to reposition her correctly as well as her finally seeing her Papa. I miss her so much. She doesn't understand why her Papa abandoned her.

I have both her PC and mine at home trying to get it to work. I was instructed to set auto-answer, auto-camera. My daughter's camera is working on her computer as well as the sound. But when I call her from my PC, it rings 5 times and it tells me she's not online. Since she's quadriplegic, she can't answer herself. What am I doing wrong? I'm so close! (I hope) How do I get her Skype online so it stays online?

First, let me say that I find your Ten Forums username to be wrong. You are not a @VillageIdiot, in my opinion you are rather a VillageHero. You are a dad willing to do everything possible for her daughter.

In these times, we too often forget the role of family members as caretakers. We, of course, will respect the nurses, doctors, first response workers and so on, but quite often do not give a second thought for those parents caring about their children, children taking care of their parents, and so on.

For me, you are a hero. Thank you for posting, thank you for reminding me about what's important.

    OK, then to the business.

On your daughter's laptop, open Skype and select Settings:

On navigation pane on the left, select Calling, then select Advanced on right pane:

Need to make Skype work for my handicapped/non-verbal daughter.-image.png

Now turn on both Answer incoming calls automatically and Start my video automatically:

    That should do it.

I would rather suggest you use Teamviewer , its a desktop sharing / remote controlling app that does it with ease .

Once after you set it up on both ends it provides a unique ID and then you can set a Password of your own too on her laptop where you can enter them on your side and then recieve a terminal like window that shows her desktop screen just as if you are sitting there and also allow you full control over it using your mouse and keyboard , so you can more of do any further adjustments , trouble shoot problems and even set it to play videos for her as you take a break .

Personal use is free , link here : TeamViewer Windows Download for Remote Desktop access and collaboration

P.S Despite it does assign a random password on every windows reboot , it is highly recommended to set your own password so it's kept the same after reboots since there might not be a mean to know the new randomly generated one from your side .

    Need Skype

    Thanks nIGHTmAYORfor your reply.

I've already got ISL Online for remote control. I need Skype so I can see and converse with my daughter as well as her CNAs.

Kari, I posted a thread named "Need to make Skype work for my handicapped/non-verbal daughter" a couple of days ago. You replied with a very sweet post. Thank you so much. Your reply was extremely precise in describing what I needed to do. When I followed your very clear instructions, I found out that I had already set auto-start and auto-camera to "ON". So there must be something else that isn't allowing us to connect. Any other ideas on what I should check?

    Thanks again,

To be honest, I have no idea why it does not work for you.

If Skype is set to start when Windows starts, and computer is set to be always on (no Sleep or Hibernate when X minutes idle), it should work.

I will do some more searching, posting here if I find something.

I do not use Skype much but I do know this : there are three versions of Skype out there , the App Skype the one you get from app store , the Desktop Skype the one you download from the web , and finally the Business Skype which is the one that comes bundled with Microsoft Office .

There are plans to deprecate Skype for Business and disconnecting it from all windows settings had been in effect .

Also I even don't know if above settings provided by Mr. @Kari is intended for the App Skype or the Desktop one or both , you can switch between them and try and see which one had been affected by those settings .

So like you see Skype is kind of a confusing app , yet if all fails this is where a Remote Desktop programs such as Free TeamViewer or Paid ISL comes handy as I suggested , you can use it to pick up the call from the other end

    Thanks nIGHT mAYOR,
I've got the Skype app on both computers. I see what you are talking about and I'll give it a try.
