Installing the OS on a different portion to apps

I plan to install a 1TB NVMe SSD, to the MB M.2 slot, if I partition this to say 250GB / 750GB and put the OS user profiles etc on the smaller partition and games apps on the larger, would this impact on speed in any way ? It’s to allow me to make an image backup, without backing up all the software and games.

It's fine like that, that's what I was doing all the time. With hard disks it even had some speed advantage, look up "Disk short stroking". SSDs work differently so that doesn't help.
There will be some disk slowdown when SSD starts filling up over 50 -75% but that doesn't depend on partitioning scheme.

Pardon me for butting in but, out of interest / nosiness, does the 750GB size of the games partition being discussed indicate that games can take up that amount of storage space?
And is it the installation of the games themselves or is it the files/records you generate while playing?

Well. as far as games and programs are concerned, another partition is just another drive. During game installation (most have that option) you just choose to install it to different letter but some of it's files will also install in C: as well as possibly any saved games.

It was the size of the games that I was asking about. I couldn't see why you'd be discussing a 750GB partition for them.

There are many very large games nowadays with just downloads before installation go over 50GB and may take twice or more space when installed.
You can also use that second partition to keep personal files like pictures, music, movies on it so you don't loose them if windows go kaput.

Mike - The OP did not mention "personal files like pictures, music, movies" for that partition but only "the software and games" and that's what aroused my interest.
