If i can get ad-free x64 PotPlayer installation files from file-hippo, I don't mind using this media player. I just wrote off PotPlayer because of the bundled adware.

What about MPC-HC/BE, any advice on installing FFMPEG, Lavfilters, and MadVR on these Open Source media players?

I found this guide: PotPlayer guide . GitHub

Of the other players you ask about I've only used MPC-HC and that was some time ago. I don't remember why I didn't keep it.

Others that I've used include S-Player, VLC, GOM, MPV-Easy, SMPlayer, LightAlloy (discontinued) and KMPlayer.

Guide for MPC-HC - it should be the same for windows 10:

Windows 8.1 MPC-HC and MadVR Setup Guide - How to install and configure MPC-HC with madvr

Apparently this does it all for you:

Kawaii Codec Pack 0.6.0.9 - Play Hi10p videos

I'll install it and see what happens.

    Okay installed:

Kawaii Codec Pack 0.6.0.9 - Play Hi10p videos

It does what it says and pretty much installs and configures everything for you.

It creates Start Menu entries (I'm using a third party start meun so it looks different)

Within the player everything is configured but there are options if you want them:

I installed Kawaii Codec Pack 0.6.0.8 and discovered that MPC-HC doesn't display timeline thumbnail previews.

Research shows that MPC-BE has this feature so I'll try Kawaii Codec Pack Black Edition 1.0.8 instead.

Overall - impressive if you don't want the hassle of setting everything up.

Installed Kawaii Codec Pack Black Edition 1.0.8 (installs MPC-BE) and one notable difference is that thumbnail previews can be configured to show on the timeline:

I'd say try it. It does setup nearly everything for you.

    Plus you can backup:

Also I like that you can get skinless playback with hover activated controls in PotPlayer.

I've just discovered that in MPC-BE you can hide/show controls by pressing 1,2 or 3 during playback.

Note: Personally I don't ever remember seeing this when running the installer. No PUP's have ever been installed. I guess it's users not paying attention.
Pot Player is ad-supported, but I see nothing wrong with it, it is better rather than to end up like MPC-HC.

The thing is I never see any ads when using or installing PotPlayer.

Kawaii Codec Pack looks great but it hasn't been updated in over 4 years. I definitely like the MPC-HC and BE as both are frequently updated forks of the original abandoned MPC project. MPV also looks nice but I prefer a GUI and I just don't quite trust PotPlayer.

Just to clarify, I believe that MPC forks need Lavfilters and MadVR filters and include FFMPEG, correct?

FYI, here is a link to newer beta MadVR filter.

What happened to MPC-HC? I have a huge problem with Ads. You never know what is hidden away. I believe that the author of PotPlayer originally distributed KM Player and sold to a company that subsequently ruined the program. And Avast has totally ruined the free version of CCleaner (paid version is ok I believe). If sites offer free versions with ads, they should offer a paid version without ads an I would be more than happy to pay a nominal fee.

But you are downloading PotPlayer from filehippo, correct?

Kawaii Codec Pack doesn't require an update. It uses download links for the lastest versions of the software that it installs.

    Example: It installed this.

Installing and Configuring MadVR and LavFilters on media players-mpc-v1.4.5.jpg

    So latest version:

    MPC-BE 1.5.4 Free Download - VideoHelp

Yes I get PotPlayer from FileHippo but also block potplayermini.exe in my firewall.

I unblocked it and didnt get ads.

I do use a modified hosts file though.

I'll lauch PotPlayer and try to work out if it tries to connect anywhere.

It tries to connect to the Korean develper's site to send usage statistics.

    It doesn't connect if blocked.
