Windows Live Movie Maker, video fine, but no audio

It's been years since I made a video of anything but I am certain I've narrated videos simply using Windows Movie Maker. I read it had been discontinued (no support etc.) but I found it and downloaded it on my laptop.

I made a short clip to try it out and it recorded the video perfectly, but nothing I said was recorded. I checked my mic and it works fine, and Window Movie Maker has permission to use it. I see you can "add" narration but that's not what I want. I just want to use my webcam to record a "how to" video for my gal-friend that I share info with about making home-remedies.

I can't figure it out, how to record me making the stuff, and telling her what I am doing as I go. Anyone have info on how to do this with the version of WMM I have? I'll add my laptop info too, below:

Can't find the version of WMM, only says 2012, older than dirt I realize. Ok, so another question would be, is there an alternative that is free that records a video with audio as well?

    Thanks for any help:)

I use OBS software to record my desktop with audio. I have 4 monitors and can select any one of them at any time but not all 4 at once.
If I need to edit that clip, I then use Shotcut software to remove the audio clip and add my own audio.

OBS: Open Broadcaster Software | OBS
    Shotcut: Shotcut - Home

I found out today that I can easily record video just using my laptop camera. It came out fine, not high quality though for sure, but it's ok for what I'm making just for my friend. I will check out the software you use though because if I get more into it, I would like to have better quality.

I mix my health-type things in the kitchen, lighting is too dark or too bright it seems, and I have only the stove to sit my laptop on (small kitchen). But like I said, these don't need to be high quality, not going to share them on Youtube or anything I did have fun a few years ago using WMM. Made a slideshow of pictures of my brother for his birthday. I think I used Powerpoint and then uploaded it to WMM but honestly, I don't remember much of the hows because I didn't stick to making videos. It was interesting I remember, to add my own music and then get it to match the slideshow. Came out great, more accident than skill

I downloaded the software, wow, seems really neat although I have to learn how to use it. I know you said you can record your desktop with audio, which I've used Icecream screen recorder in the past. But does it record using your webcam as well? I'll find out the more I read about it but thought I'd ask you if you are around Thanks for the heads up on this. I love new software to try out

I don't have a webcam so I can't help you at all there.
Here's a good Web site with some good OBS info on it: The Ultimate OBS Studio Tutorial - from Become a Blogger

And this OBS Web site has the pdf Help Guide: Open Broadcaster Software Studio Multiplatform Help Guide [PDF] | OBS Forums
Scroll down just a bit to see the link.

You'll learn quite a bit if you read through the help guide while you have OBS studio running so you can follow through. And the first link has some great videos.
The OBS support forum is great too, lots of help from the users there.

    Good Luck!

Hey Blackink! That is a great program! The instructional vid you sent me explained how to easily use your webcam, and record audio and use my mic!! I am not going to try it today I don't think, but I am hoping it will be a bit better quality for my health vids I want to share just with my buddies If I get good at it, maybe make them "public".

Thank you again, I'm just now getting my laptop set up with the software. I first downloaded, and tried it on my PC but the laptop is what I can move around in my kitchen to record my "stuff"

That's great news! Glad to hear it!!
I should have mentioned that your webcam would work with it only because I've seen others in the OBS forum mention it.

Have fun and enjoy the software.
I guess a lot of gamers use it to stream their games. Are you a gamer? I'm not, never done it and never will, unless you can call Virtual Pool a game!!! lolol Or maybe online cribbage!!!

It is a great program and all the videos to teach me how to use/setup different things are easy to follow I do like some games although when I bought this gaming computer, I had planned to do multi-player, I mean, learn how to. I have a friend that wanted me to learn the one based on Lord of the Rings?? That was a monster and scared me into not wanting to play those types of games. But I love hidden object, and LOVE "The Room" series, have all of them, but Old Sins I have to play on Android Tablet, still super fun I think. I've played The Witness but got bored with that. Then I played another I got called Portal. I got stuck somewhere and quit playing it. I don't like games that stress me out. I like easier, and ones I am not up against any timer

One thing you should remember to do every time you run the OBS software: right click on the desktop icon and select Run as administrator. It will run better in the background if you have other software running and you can even use it with hot keys.
Example: When I just double click on the OBS icon to open the program, when I have other software running that I want to record with OBS, I have to bring OBS to the forefront so I can actually click on the Record button on the main screen-the hot keys won't work. But when I open OBS by right clicking it and select Run as administrator, I can minimize the OBS software and use the hot keys that I set up to use in Settings and I can Record with it, stop recording, pause the recording and start it again, I can switch to any screen/monitor I want (I have 4 monitors).
I trade stocks so I like to record my trades. I'd rather do this than write in a journal!

And this is where the Shotcut software comes in that I provided a link to in an earlier post. I can put several clips/videos together, I can do a voice over if needed, I can cut parts of the videos out, I can cut parts of the audio out.
So once you're familiar with OBS and you're feeling frisky and brave, check out Shotcut. It's a free video editor and there are several good videos on YouTube to guide you along.

Best wishes, stay safe, wash your hands, and have fun....that's the most important thing you can do right now...Have Fun!!!!

EDIT: When I first installed OBS software, I installed it by right clicking on the exe file it and selecting Run as administrator so I thought it would run that way all the time when I ran it but not so, according to the experts at the OBS forums.

Thanks for the direction on opening the program. I think I ran into some difficulties when I was trying to record my game so my sister could see what it was like. Anyway, that is interesting information so I'll tuck it away in case I do anymore screen-recording, which I probably will

Yes, funny when I read this last message of yours, I had just finishing washing my hands after going out to the garbage can I always have been a bit ocd so that all comes pretty easy anyway. You take care as well and your setup sounds like fun to me I've just got the 2 screens, but am wanting a bigger desk and more toys, lol The possibilities are endless, ttyl

lolol...not sure if you saw my last minute edit that I added.
Anyway, now that you have 2 screens, you'll never go back to one.
I have 2 computers, one is a Dell 530 Inspiron that has 2 screens and the other PC is one that I built myself-that one has the 4 monitors.
I'll never go back to using one monitor...

And there's nothing wrong with being ocd.....
