    Notepad nuisance


    I was wondering if there is a way around this. I like to use Notepad for simple notemaking. But then sometimes I accidentaly open a second instance of Notepad and I get a second window open (so I have two windows open in parallel of the same file) and I keep editing one and then after a while maybe accidentaly editing the other one... This of course doesn't happen with Word. Whenever I open a file that is already opened, no second window gets opened.
    I really like Notepad, I appreciate its extreme simplicity. But this thing bothers me. Anything I can do to fix it? Thanks!

    Hi, one way might be to substitute for Notepad.

    For example, I used NotepadReplacer
    Notepad Replacer: Replace Notepad the Easy Way by Binary Fortress Software
    to replace Notepad with Docupad, a bit more sophisticated and tabbed. There are other options of course.

    Opening a file in that, then double clicking the same file simply brings focus to the open instance.

    It's also possible the problem will disappear when MS updates Notepad:

    I would suggest it is only a matter of taking care? What are you clicking to get another instance of notepad? Only way I am aware of is by right clicking the executive and selecting Notepad again (Yourself ???)

    Nice! Thanks I will wait for the update.
    Well, I have many many Notepad files on my desktop, so I just double click them. It's quite easy for me to open one file twice

    Notepad++ is much much worse. I opened a file many times and kept editing it for weeks, then I uninstalled it and I lost month work, because you have to manually hit Save every time, Windows Notepad at least asks.

    Thanks for the warning. Time for me to once again use the @EdTittel procedure to retain a copy for future use

Nuisance desktop.ini file

This is no big deal but more of a nuisance. Windows has created two desktop.ini files. That is ok except that one floats back to the main group of icons whenever I reboot instead of staying where I moved it. Is there any way of getting it to stick...
