Hi Max. There are two programs of this kind that I recommend. One is free and one is paid. I know you are mostly interested in free programs but I ll also mention the paid one because its value is worth many times what the license cost.

The free one is called TimeFreeze. The company is Toolwiz. Its been around about 8 years. There is another program of this kind that also goes by the name TimeFreeze, but that one is developed by Wondershare. Dont confuse them. The one from WS is paid, is also a good program but the one I am recommending is the one from Toolwiz.

The paid one is called Shadow defender. When you install it, it gives you a 30 day trial license. The license is Lifetime. So, you buy it once, and you ll be able to use it for many years. In the early 2010's I bought 3 license, they still good. Shadow defender has been developed for about 13 years.

I used both programs in the past, both are excellent as they are reliable and do what they are supposed to do. Choosing either one, is a good choice.

I haven't used this type of programs during the past 5 years, mainly because for my personal case use of the computer I have no use for them. But it is very likely that this might change in the future. I am a Sandboxie user and since we are (maybe yes, maybe no) at what might be the end of the road for Sandboxie, this type of program is a viable replacement for Sandboxie. So, if and when Sandboxie dies, and cant be used anymore because of lack of maintenance, I ll be switching to using programs like ShadowDefender or TimeFreeze.

Personally, I give an slight edge to ShadowDefender. But both programs are great. Like I said earlier, choosing either one is a good choice. There are many programs of this type but I known this 2 programs for many years and know many people who are using them and use this type of programs all the time, and I read what they are saying about the programs, so, for what you want, for W10, I know this are not only good choices but probably the best of their type.

The thread below is sort of an unofficial ShadowDefender support thread. Good reading.

    You are welcome, Max.

I don't know how familiar you are with this type of programs so I tell you this, in W10, you should disable Fast start. Other than that, you ll find this programs are pretty easy to use and can be used without complications. Try to keep things simple, in this programs via settings, you can exclude files and folder from being virtualized. Do as little as possible of that. For convenience I think is good to do it for your bookmarks in browser. And when you download something, if you want to save it out of ShadowMode/FreezeMode, do it manually. You ll have the option for saving downloads or files you edited or created, you just right click the file, and the option for saving appears.

The people who run into issues are usually people who try to exclude all kind of stuff that shouldn't be excluded, for example, antivirus updates, Windows updates, etc.

In Windows10, I recommend you start the computer out of ShadowMode, do your daily updates, and then get into ShadowMode. Only exclude bookmarks, and anything else you want to save, you do it by right clicking the file or folder.
