    MP4 files will not play

Suddenly mp4 files that have been forward to me will not play in VLC. When I click on the file I end up with this message:
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE\SB53GZ50\ plus statement Invalid Value for Registery.
I am not positive but it seems to have started with the recent Windows 10 update. Anyone have a fix for this? I have uninstalled VLC and upload what I believe is the current version, but there was no change.
    My windows version is 1909.

Will the .mp4 files play in VLC after having been saved to the drive? Could be an issue with how the Browser is handling them. VLC Version 3.0.8 is the latest I have, Help, About.

Have you checked Windows Media Player, just checked and it can handle some .mp4 files. [Windows Accessories]

    Thanks for your reply.
Saving didn't do anything. My version was 3.0.3 so I uninstalled including removal of the cache and installed 3.0.8 and the file will still not play, and I have more than one.

Try another player - Daum PotPlayer is one of the best around (when installing, select the codecs option as well)

If that doesn't work, then the problem lies with the files (did the same files now causing probs work before the update, or is it just newer files ?)

Alternative, run the files through AviDemux or VidCoder (save as different filename in each case, just to keep the original intact).

You could try installing K-Lite Codecs. That may help.

Changed my default video player to Windows Media Player and the mp4 will not play. Will add Potplayer or CnX and see what happens then.

Found what I think is the real problem in my app default settings page, somehow there is this TWINUI that is shown for music, photo, and video player. Even thought I select VLC and it runs the Twinui stays there. Have found one solution online to remove twinui through windows power shell, but I wonder if this twinui could be corrected by doing a reset to Microsoft recommended defaults that is a selection on the default app page.

Great news. Please mark the thread a “Solved” so the others might benefit from the solution.

I don't consider it solved, seeing how I questioned if the fix I found online is the best to use, or will the Microsoft reset work. I did not want to assume that the reset will get rid of the twinui issue. I will wait and hope that someone might answer my question.

    Thanks

TwinUI (Tablet Windows User Interface) is a Windows shell library. There are many reports of a bug (example, example) which Microsoft apparently admit to (see first example).

There is a fix (see second example) - a PowerShell script which reinstalls the default windows applications and reloads/resets associated registry values.

You can find the fix on GitHub here: TwinUI Fix

I haven't used it yet but I do have it downloaded just in case.

    Hope this helps...
