Gang I知 going through someone else痴 junk pile while migrating from old windows and laptop to new. With her permission I知 going to dump duplicate files, especially pictures. Lots are in triplicate as best I can tell.
what app or package is good circa 2020?

You may need to also consider checking for duplicates based on content, rather than file name. This is common where images have been downloaded direct from camera/tablet, with the naming convention based on the device. Images are then copied to another location, renamed more meaningfully, but the originals remain in situ.
Being freeware, they're not perfect (i.e. may miss the occasional dup). So recommend running 2 programs if you want to double check. Otherwise, close enough might be good enough.
EDIT : Can be a bit tiresome, but always backup current files first .. duplicates in all. Nothing worse than finding you've deleted all copies of a file accidentally ... especially if you're managing someone else's system.
Easy Duplicate Finder [I sometimes use it] also has a duplicate photo/image version.
