Can't associate mp3 files with 64bit WMP?

This is apparently a more general issue in my case with Windows than initially thought, so I have edited the OP accordingly.

I'm getting a weird reproducible Explorer hang when using a cetain option in the Properties menu of any file type.

Here are the 2 steps that causes this:

1. Right-click on any file type on your PC (audio file, Word document, etc.), choose Properties and click the "Change..." button shown here.



2. A menu comes up, choose "Look for another app on this PC" as shown here:


A dialog box then appears where you can select the desired app to associate the file type with. Just click "Cancel" on that dialog box.

For some reason, in my case this makes my cursor stuck in a loading loop icon and I can't click anything within the Properties box of the file. I'd have to end it using Task Manager or wait for a very long time until the Properties box is reactive again.

I did an sfc /scannow but didn't find any problems. Using Windows 10 Pro x64 1909 with latest updates.

Anyone else experiencing this when following these steps?

I use WMP and no, I've not had any problems playing my files.

It' doesn't matter if the OS is 64 or 32 bit media files should play, especially mp3 files. With that is it possible the file is corrupt?

I don't use WMP. I also don't use "mp3" files. Mine are flac and APE. My Media player is JRiver Media Center.

That said, I see no reason why you can't associate your mp3 files with Windows Media Player. Again, my question - are you sure the files themselves aren't the issue. Have you tried other files?

I'm still a little confused so I'll post what I "think" you're saying....

• You can associate your mp3 files with the 32-bit Windows Media Player without issue.
• You can not associate your mp3 files with the 64-bit Windows Media Player.

Is that correct?

Anyway, I just tried associating my wave files with both the 32-bit WMP (Program Files x86) and the 64-bit WMP (Program Files) and both played without issue.
