Mine is set to Groove Music, but I play my files directly from JRiver Media Center app. I've never even bothered to see what the default player was set to until you asked. I simply open JRiver Media Center library and play files from there. No issues.

All that said, I'm not sure why your issue is happening. Why is it you "need" the 64-bit app?

Thanks a lot for testing this out.

So I just discovered something else; it's not just selecting the 64bit wmplayer.exe that makes it hang. Apparently selecting "Change..." in the Properties box then "Look for another app on this PC" and just clicking Cancel in the browsing box that appears also makes it hang for some reason.

So the problem is not tied to WMP but it's an overall bug. I will change the OP accordingly.
