So can Pot player and do other more things VLC can't.

cereberus, maybe in the past VLC had that advantage with codecs that made it popular, but right now it's only it's name that makes it popular. That is simple truth. Time when there was a problem with codecs is long gone. All modern players include all necessary codecs nowadays.

By the way, in the past, when it was problem with codecs, not only VLC was shining. Media Player Classic was also very powerful media player with all necessary codecs able to play video files and it was even lighter than VLC.
I answered WHY VLC is popular.

Pointless people tediously harping on about Potplayer being superior. This is only relevant if user needs feature not in VLC.

People here are trying to turn this into a p##sing contest.

It is all down to User choice.

I stick with it as it meets ALL MY needs, so why should I bother change?

I do a lot of video editing and processing. Best apps? Well, my most frequently used, anyway...

FFmpeg (from the command line). It's open source and the working heart of almost every open source editor out there. But from the command line (or a batch file) you can do so much more than the options most editors provide access to.

Movie Maker 2012. It may be old, but it's the best/quickest way I know to locate edit points to the nearest frame.

    Audacity for the soundtrack work.

And my media player? Well, it just gets used for a quick preview of the finished work, or to ckeck on work in progress. All I want is something that opens quickly and plays adequately. For proper viewing I cast to my TV. The built in Movies app is as good as anything for a quick look. I do have VLC as well and I use it when I need to capture a snapshot from a video, or to play a DVD (or ISO of a DVD).
Minitool have been hosting the original 2012 Movie Maker a while.

However, they have now developed it it further.

I really don't care about some pointless people here, if they like and use VLC player or not, it's their choice. Never forced them to use something else. I just said Pot Player was better player and if some pointless people don't like this statement, it's their problem.

My favorite programs in the past were Arts & Letters Graphics Editor and Serif PagePlus, both quite useful for signs, posters, etc., when the church needed such things.

I see that there is a long debate about VLC vs Potplayer. First of all there is no better or best. As long as one suits your needs it all good. But if I had to compare them after having used both I would say that VLC is great for the average user who wants to throw any video file on a player and just play it. On the other hand if you are really picky on quality then potplayer allows you to get the best possible quality out of your videos. This is because you can download and use the latest LAV filters, madVR FFmpeg, and even reclock and trust me the quality changes drastically. You can choose each filetype (mp4, mpeg, WMV ..etc) to use a chosen decoder.
I never install Potplayer myself. I use UniExtract to extract all the needed files from setup.exe to a folder and then put that folder in my C program files folder. Settings are written to ini file and not to windows registry. You have to then compare both and see which one better suits your needs.

    EDIT:

ooops, I jumped from page 11 to here to add my comment, but didn't see this page where some CLOSED the subject!
So please ignore this post and accept my apologies for having continued a close subject.
On the other hand this is a technical forum were we should express our ideas and views and not try to impose something while sitting behind an ego! It unfortunately works with many subjects (specially politics) but not with tech info~!

Beside Total Commander, my longest serving program is probably MS Publisher from MS Office (presently 2013) but used it extensively since it's first version. Wherever possible I use it instead of MS Word because it can do same things plus much more. Did a lot of work on it for practically everything worth printing, Large product catalogs, restaurant menus to simple flyers. It can import practically all files from MS Office and much more, Elementary picture handling and I even made internet blogs and few sites combining with MS Power point. You can still download large numbers of templates for practically everything, from business cards to paper airplanes.
