For me, the best ever program (which has got me out of many a foolish move) has got to be Macrium. The times I have done something very silly and major happens from time to time. Good old Macrium has been an absolute life saver.
    What do other recommend?
    C
Well after looking thru 7 pages of Utilities, lots of great apps, actually none of them have to do with real programing. If one is a Real programmer that writes in a multitude of languages, the best app that I have found lately (wish it was around 20 years ago), has to be:

    "NOTEPAD++"

I'm truly amazed on well this program works when I have to write some real code (ie "C" "ASM", Batch command, "PS" formatting etc).

It has templates for what ever language you need. If its an .ASM file, it knows the format.

Years ago ie Windows 98 had NO real text editor other than Notepad. It was a poor excuse for any real programmer. Lucky for me there was a company that ported the Original SPF available only main frame computers. When it became available on a PC, you could build the necassary templates for each language. Time consuming but it worked on the PC. Since I was a Mainframe programmer for more years that I can remember, when I moved to develop software for PC, this product worked. But for me as a programmer the best text editor to date has to be "NOTEPAD++".

I still use X2 from an Blair Thompson, an IBMer. Used it when I worked there and still use it today.

    X2 Programmer's Editor
Getting started with the X2 editor

X2 supports the Rexx interpreter, so throw in Open Object Rexx and your all set.

Probably drive Notepad/Wordpad people nuts as it's a line editor that allows you to work both vertically (columns) and horizontally (rows).

Agreed - I used it only yesterday to recover my Dell laptop when the Store app would not load for no obvious reason

    Microsoft Office 2007
    - I use Outlook 2007 all day long
    - I use Excel 2007, Access 2007 & Office Picture manager 2007 several times every day.

There have been several pale imitations produced since 2007. I spent a long time trying out two of them, "Microsoft Office 2016" & "Microsoft Office 365", but they were clearly temporary experimental versions produced by people who hated their users.
    - Their only substantial advancements were in support of corporate installations based on Sharepoint and in their VBA functions.
    - They also included the removal or corruption of several highly useful capabilities from Office 2007.

I don't know how on earth anyone could pick just one "best" program. With every Windows install I've ever done, there are four programs that I cannot live without.
    Firefox
    VeraCrypt
    Paint Shop Pro 5.03
    Microsoft Works 6

PSP and MS Works are both from 1998 and I am always relieved when they fire up and work just fine.
