Install the old MS PhotoEd in Win 10?

    Win10 1909 (18363.628) x64

I still want the extremely simple and effective functionality that MS Photo Editor provides (photoed.exe from old Office versions). I have an x64 installer somebody made for Win7 (worked perfectly in Win7) and tested installing it into Win10 ~ it seemed to work EXCEPT that MS Update demanded some XP-sp3 updates which either would not install or could not be found. These appear to be available as standalone downloads from sites like CNET and such, but I'm wondering if installing these old elements -- unsupported updates and such -- into Win10 is significantly problematic.

Please note I'm not looking for alternative image editor suggestions (and not interested in virtualization), just wondering two things:

    (A) does anybody have a dedicated Win10 installer for MS Photo Editor?
    (B) assuming I can install and run it, do the XP-period elements represent a significant, persistent security risk for Win10?

It would be nice to know exactly which Office versions are involved. I have Office 2000 on a couple of Notebooks running the latest 64-bit of Windows 10 but don't recall seeing that program as a choice. I did Custom installs and did not include Outlook. I do find at times that it is problematic installing old 32-bit programs on 64-bit equipment and nearly impossible with 16-bit programs. WinXP did have a 64-bit version but only for Professional edition.

This may be of interest (has been discussed on tenforums before):

The original ("real") Photo Editor was included with Office97 and Office2000. Later versions revised it to Microsoft Picture Manager which was quite different. Somebody worked up an x64 installer for Win7 (I want my MS Photo Editor back! Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums) and it appears to be workable in Win10, I'm hesitating only over installing XP-based elements into the new OS...

I would like to know if you were able to install MS Photo Editor on Windows 10. MS Photo Editor is the most convenient image editor for me, and I just bought a new notebook that comes with Windows 10 that does not have Photo Editor.
    Thanks in advance.

    First post

    I've the same problem.
I've office 2019 installed, and I can install photo editor (ver 3.0.2.3) from my office xp CD.

As mentioned, Windows 10 wants to update office xp but fails.
However, this update works when only office xp is installed on win10. (Checked on my portable).
Happily, I've the office xp sp3 installer executable, and I can install this update without problems.
But, the additional security updates for office xp, can not installed by the win10 installer. He gives an error.

So he problem is as follows (I think):
    - The windows 10 updater fails to update office xp due to the presence of office 2019.
    - Manual installation of the update executables works.

Another solution I found, is described here :
MS Photo Editor - Windows 7 Help Forums

However, on win 10 are some issues, but are covered here :
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...c-b08d1bdcf6ca
Unhappily, I was not able to perform the tweaks as mentioned in this article.
So if someone has a good idea, I am looking forward to it.

    Kind regards,
    Mark
PS - My compliments to the moderators for this outstanding forum.

From the thread I posted above (no response) I will quote for you what people said they found seemed to work:
Anything in Windows 10 like the very old Photoed.exe?

    have a look here
Windows 7: MS Photo Editor "PHOTOED.exe"
    http://www.sevenforums.com/music-pic...to-editor.html
    404 Not Found - dstealth.com
    MS Photo Editor v3.0.2.3 - 32bit
    MS Photo Editor v3.0.2.3 - 64bit
    Photo Editor PATCH's
have no problem at all up to now to use this solution on WinX 64bit
needed only replacement of "PHOTOED.EXE" as described in Patch!
want to use the old MS PhotoEd program (photoed.exe) they never really got rid of it; they simply hide it when you go from XP or 7,8 10, etc. Also, for some reason, it's hard to search the command line in Windows 10 with any success. But the program is still very much available. As was stated here before, you will find the program already installed if you have Office 2000, Office 2010, and so on. It is a "Tool" found in Office's common files. Using Windows Explorer hunt around in your Programs Folder (presuming you do have some version of Office installed) and you will find it. Once you find the logo, right click that and create a shortcut. You will be told that you can't create the shortcut there (in the folder it's already in) and asked if you want to create a shortcut on your desktop. Click to do that and then you may (if you wish) right click the logo on your desk top to pin it to your task bar (or earlier pin it to start up if you want to do that). Hope that helps.

I have been using PhotoEd in Windows 10 without issue for a while. The Seven Forums links provided are the sources, IIRC, but just in case check this out too: Iscove Lab Software - Homebrew
