    How do I make Microsoft Mathematics 4.0 run on Windows 10?

    I want to run Microsoft Mathematics 4.0 application (https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/down....aspx?id=15702) but it won't launch, even if I set compatibility mode to Windows 7. Also tried 32-bit flavour but it still doesn't run. Version 4.0 was released in January 2011, so there's no reason it shouldn't launch on Windows 10. Has anyone been able to run this application on Windows 10?

    edit: I realised that the companion applications Converter and Triangle tools do start, it's just the main program that won't.

    Did you install the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 update on the downoad page? Try installing MS Mathematics from an admin account - run the installer as an administrator in compatibility mode for Windows 7.

    The link for the .NET Framework installer is dead. I downloaded it from another location, but it won't even install. I enabled .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows features and rebooted, and still nothing. Never seen a program as stubborn as this one, I don't get why it just doesn't start.

    Sounds as if your installation of Win10 has issues. I just downloaded Math and installed it without any add-ons, opens just fine. I won't be using it as not needed [not a mathematician] but it did add DirectX runtime support, already had .NET Framework 3.5 installed from some other program. Win10 is now at Build 18363.592.

    And yeah, works here as well. Running Windows 10 x64, 1909 latest build. No additional add-on needed.

    Hi there

    @ksio89

    Net framework 3.5 can be installed via powershell command -- it's on this Forum somewhere - search for it. You'll also need the Windows install iso too.

    My view is that for anybody actually wanting to run legacy software is to run the thing in a Virtual Machine --VM's these days are quite efficient and normally don't impose too much load on the HOST (unless of course your VM is the "main Workhorse").

    It's a mugs game really spending a lot of man hours into trying to get really old legacy programs to run on modern hardware on the latest OS'es --Using VM's though no problem.

    How about this -- Windows 1 !!!!!!!

    VM software is free - VMWare player, Virtual Box, HYPER-V (need W10 Pro for that) or QEMU/KVM if on a Linux Host.

    Cheers

    I unblocked the installer, ran the program as admin and it still won't launch. This is hardly a legacy software, as it was released for Windows 7 in 2011, and using a very demanding program such as a virtual machine software just to run it is practically infeasible. I managed to start the application on one of my machines, but on the other it will refuse to launch God knows why.

    I've no idea why it won't run on your machine. I've been using the program off and on for various Windows OS's and never had an issue installing or running it.

    Do you have .NET installed? Also make sure you install the Direct X files it asks (should ask) to install. In fact, you might try installing the redistributable Direct X files - DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
