uninstall Acrobat and reinstall again, setting it at the default PDF reader
thanks sygnus21, if you read posts #13 and 19 you'll see that I have already uninstalled and reinstalled, both without and with the cleaning tool - with no amelioration
and Acrobat is still my default PDF reader as I am rather puzzled as to why it works normally now and then, I keep an eye on it, I have so far managed to work on the files I needed to alter during those moments when the PDF remain open until I close them..

    Thanks for the update.

Yeah, I'm puzzled too, but as I said, I had no issues when I ran my copy. I'm now running Acrobat 2017.

    I have it

    I had similar problems
    Just do that:
    1. Disable web
    2. Open Acrobat 11
    3. Wait 20 secs
    4. Neable web
    5. Open the file you want

    Done!

If you do not close Acrobat, it is OK.
If you close it then do the above procedure

    Thanks a lot greektakis !
Pity I did not wait, I recently acquired Acrobat 2017...
And as a matter of fact, I prefered the older version, I found it easier to organize the tools
OK, I'll mark the post answered, hope it will be useful to some :)

    Thanks for the feedback.

Have you looked at "Manage Tools" under Edit?

    Good luck.

    hello,
I have been using Adobe Acrobat XI Pro for a number of years, it worked fine
yesterday suddenly a file I had just opened disappeared.
no error message, nothing, just pfftt... now you see it, now you don't
and all my pdf files behave the same way... 10s and they dissolve, I can always read them in a browser, but when I need to alter them, it's impossible
    a restart changes nothing
has any of you been confronted with such an issue ?
    and found a solution ?
    thanks !

Win 10 Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.592) (win made an update last night, nothing changed as far as the problem with acrobat is concerned )

    SOLUTION:

    1. Install official Microsoft Compatibility Administrator found here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/get-started/adk-install#adkwin10

    2. start "Compatibility Administrator (64-bit).exe" in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Kits\Windows ADK\Application Compatibility Toolkit\Developer and Tester Tools\

    3. expand "System Database" > expand "Applications" > find and click "adobe creative suit 6" > on the right window "right" click pdapp.exe "Disable Entry"

    4. Run Acrobat X Pro, now insted of crashing it will show a "new" adobe activation agreement (this is what was crashing the acrobat x pro), you can now accept it and Acrobat X Pro runs with 0 issues in 2021. (no need for any compatibly modes).
