    hi again Piko !
reading the files is no issue, I can always open them in a browser or in sumatra
but I need to open them in Acrobat when I want to edit them
and in acrobat, they vanish after a few seconds...

After many years I have not found a free Win pgm that will do that.

Merely pointing there are no free pgms, "affordable" is subjective. I'm not sure about the current offerings as I gave up looking years ago.

    indeed !
mrgeek posted a link where I saw that PDFelement Standard seems to offer add text and graphics plus all the other features I need. The perpetual licence comes at some $70... It's not cheap but compared to Acrobat DC it's still a bargain... If I get nowhere fixing my issue, I plan to download a trial to to give it a try

Maybe an alternative is AlterPdf. At least it is cheaper.

Thanks Piko, but again it does not offer one feature I need : add text and graphics...
I have little time today to re-install, but if this fails to resolve the issue I'll have to get a software
if I am very lucky "Giveaway Of the Day" might come up with something soon....

"I have little time today to re-install"

Download the Adobe cleaning tool that I linked. Run it, reboot after it finishes and then re-try installation and update.
I've had to use software developer cleaners, like Malwarebytes and Office to do total uninstalls, leftover hidden files and registry items sometimes interfere with new or re-installs. Good Luck.

    I did, without any improvement
but something strange happens more and more often...
    stay tuned..... it's weird

I kept ACROBAT as the default for pdf so that each time I have to go to "open with" to use SUMATRA as a viewer
now and then I open without thinking and the file is in ACROBAT... and vanishes after a few seconds.... OR NOT !

what I seem to have now is a highly unstable situation where ACROBAT will keep a file open so that I can actually use the software... or not...

unfortunately "keep open" is rather the exception, but it happens and I have no idea WHY

the very same file, from the same folder, will remain open today but did the vanishing act yesterday...

right now, for instance, I have 3 pdf open on my desktop... and they have been there since I started writing here... but earlier on I could not keep anything open in ACROBAT and I have not made any reboot in between
    weird

First off, Acrobat XI does not need to be ran in "Windows 7 compatibility mode". I've been running Acrobat XI Pro since Windows 8, and carried it over to Windows 10 until last year When I upgraded to Acrobat 17. In all that time I never once used compatibility mode. And though I never ran it under Windows 1909 it did run under 1903 without issue.

As far as the OP's issue is concerned, I've no clue as I've never seen or heard of it before. But I would say instead of downloading a thousand PDF apps, uninstall Acrobat and reinstall again, setting it at the default PDF reader and going from there.
