"YOU'LL NEED A NEW APP TO OPEN THIS RES LINK" message popup

Hi everyone. Hope everyone is doing well. Anyways...I get this message popup at two very random occasions so far (see pics). The first and most annoying is when I try to play a media file using Pot Player. The file will still play normally and if I click anywhere the popup will disappear. I'm using the newest version of Pot Player 64bit and I have it as my default media player and all association files. The second occasion is when I open SERVICES window and click on the bottom "extended" tab. All text is missing but like before, if I click anywhere the popup disappears and if I click the bottom "standard" tab then "extended" after then all the text will appear as normal. Very random, right!?

I can’t find anything even related to that popup message in Google. All I've done so far is re-installed Pot Player and have windows troubleshoot windows store apps via settings (Pot Player is NOT a store app but just to see i guess) but no avail. I don't have the slightest idea where to keep going. Any input is appreciated. Thx ahead.

Hi, a wild guess suggests it's a Pot Player message, and perhaps something in the metadata- though I don't know what sort of link there could be there.

Try stripping out the metatdata from a file with, say, mp3tag, then playing it.

To identify the process responsible for the dialogue, try using e.g. Winspy
WinSpy download | SourceForge.net

- just drag the target over the popup window.

Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately it does that with any media file regardless of the metadata, since all my music files stored in my music folder have their metadata edited (stripped of crap) with (funny you mentioned it) mp3tag. What I happened to screenshot was my Downloads/Music folder where I download music NOT yet edited to store in my personal Music folder.
Also It wouldn't make sense if it was Pot Player because again it does it when I open Services from Administrative Tools.
I tried to find the process but unfortunately as soon as I click anywhere the popup disappears...so I'm literally unable to do anything with the popup. I was able to see it runs the "OpenWith,exe" file in the System32 folder but that's it

This exe (zipped) can also tell you the process. But you only need to click on the window itself.
You could also try just pressing and holding the mouse button. Odd if it disappears given the OK button.

Yeah is hard to tell but the "OK" button is grayed out and the popup window dont even have a title bar.

So I did the "follow mouse" option on WinSpy and I got this. Mind that I also have AutoHotKey installed (ahk) so if you wonder about the H icon for WinSpy. As I believed is the same popup windows you get when Windows ask/tells you about opening up a certain file with a certain app if the file doesnt have a default app to get opened with (OpenWith.exe in the Syustem32 folder). Here is a pic if you are able to figure out more.

Also fyi...is doing it just by running PotPlayer by itself...btw I also ran sfc /scannow yesterday but still nothing. Thx for your help btw.

thoough it does seem to be an issue with an unrecognised file type or similar.

That said, this video shows a similar message format (with a different issue so ignore the rest of it as it's irrelevant)

- so it does seem to be a Windows popup. I can't find anything about res link, unfortunately.

Do you have a restore point you could use created before this started to occur? Or a disk image you could restore?

Otherwise, create a new user for test purposes, and report whether you see the same thing.
If you do, an in-place upgrade repair which keeps all progs and data is an option - you will need an iso (or bootable disk) of the same build, base language and 'bitness' as you have installed.

Yeah is weird that I'm the only one in the planet that this is happening to Google!!!!

I wish it was an issue with the store as shown in the video because I would already know what to do.
I always disable restore points because they have always been useless to me. If an issue is that big that can't be fixed then I just do a clean installation. I just got this old PC set up about a week ago. Everything else is running flawlessly and I just haven't got around to do an image back-up yet...go figure something had to pop up. I might create a new user to check it out if it really gets annoying. Most of the time I use WMP on shuffle if I want to listen my music stored in my PC...since I got G-Force Platinum visualization, it looks awesome full screen on my TV. PotPlayer I use it mostly to watch a downloaded video or to listen to tracks individually from a downloaded album...like that I know what songs I'm keeping and adding to my library. Its more of a nuisance than an issue because everything still works properly...not worth the time (yet) to do any restoration. I was just hoping someone had run into the same issue. Sorry couldn't help more. Key thing about setting up a new installation is to start creating a disk image set really early, make a note of changes, create a differential image (say) then keep repeating those two steps with not too much in between. That way you've a record so you can redo the steps should you need to restore any given image at a particular date.

All of which is great, so long as you have encountered the symptom in good time.....

@Edwin- Hi, are you thinking about the Store? That's a side-line- purely as another illustration of the format of the popup as I commented. The question isn't about the Store, but about 'res link' - whatever that may be...
