Windows does not remember the last place I saved quickbooks files.

    Windows 10 x64 v1909.

Lately when saving backups of my Quickbooks files the default save location is not the last folder I used to save these files. Does anyone have an good understanding on how the last folder used information is "stored" for future use?
Is this a Windows or Quickbooks setting issue?

    Thanks,
    Steve

And never do the backup to the same drive QB is installed on as failure of the drive or partition would be a disaster. I use a 2GB USB Thumb drive for our Church's backup and keep it off-site [usually in my pocket]. I also installed QB on a Notebook "just in case" [it's allowed for the same user], use it at home occasionally. A paper tag as used with key rings would work for identification but mine is a round aluminum dog tag made at our Animal Shelter while I was on the board, non-destructive. To keep the drive letter/identification the same I always plug into the same USB port.

..and I recently learned that you cannot restore a QB company file from a backup file on an external USB drive. The backup file first has to be copied to an internal hard drive, otherwise the restore fails.

That's interesting, I back our church's QB up to a 2GB Thumb drive every time I use it, close QB, properly remove the Thumb drive [icon in the Notification Area] and put it in my pocket, shut down the computer, come home and fire up the Notebook then QB and open the Company followed by Restoring from the backup on the Thumb drive. Haven't had a problem yet in several years using QB 2013 then QB2016 and now on QB2019. [Advice from 2 CPAs recommended every third version.]

I thought it was unusual as well, but documented by QB.

If you see Error -6123,0 while restoring your company file

Step 1: Remove special characters from the file name

Make sure your backup company file name:

    • Is 30 characters or less
    • Doesn't have any special characters or spaces

Step 2: Restore your company file

If you’re restoring your company file from a backup (.qbb):

Still interesting. I just did the QB restore process again from a backup/.qbb file done yesterday and saved to the Thumb drive. Plugged it into my Notebook just half an hour ago and Restored from the Thumb drive, seems everything is fine, Register shows entries I did yesterday. The only difference is the church computer is running the Home/Core Version of Win10 while my Notebook has the Pro Version and both on the current updates, don't see where it could be a Windows problem.

And I certainly wouldn't "move" a backup file but copy it when necessary, no point in destroying something that could be useful.
