    DVD copying software

    Until recently I have been using the free version of WinXDVD to copy MP4 DVDs to my HDD. I had a small problem with one DVD and contacted the company and they recommended installing the latest trial version. What they did not tell me is that the new version has a 5 minute limitation. Very underhanded. I wrongly deleted the old version.
    I have reverted to using DVDFab which has a free licence to copy DVDs but this will only output .iso or the original VOB folder, neither of which will play on my TV. I have to convert the iso's to MP4 which takes ages.
    Does anyone here have any recommendations on any free software that will copy a DVD to MP4?

    Hi folks

    @sydh

    AnyDVD from Redfdox -- used to be Slyfox but I think they had a bit of trouble with some of the usual "suited and booted Lawyers" -- There's 100% nothing wrong in making DVD's etc THAT YOU'VE PAID FOR !! to be playable anywhere without stupid DRM encryption --

    The OLD version from Slysoft still works -- google for the source of that -- the newer version from redfox is paid software but might be worth it for you.

    On Linux though without ripping you can install some decryption libraries

    What would you guys think about the system if you could only fill up a car at SHELL gas stations, or read a book you'd purchased only "sitting on the bog".

    DRM'd music is going the way of the dodo --it's about time that these things like DVD's etc went the same way with no region codes and REGION FREE.

    With video capture easily available from Netflix / Amazon prime etc it doesn't make sense any more (even if it ever did in the past).

    AnyDVD makes an ISO of the DVD region free and DRM free -- you can then use KODI / VLC to play it with menus , subtitles etc - or do further processing such as convert to mkv / mp4 etc. Works for Blu Ray too.

    I create these isos and store on my NAS server -- KODI on Amazon fire stick plays the ripped iso's just fine into remote TV -- no need for actual DVD player any more and I've got a backup archive too ( on the NAS).

    On Linux you can still use VLC (or better KODI) to play the iso's -- simply install libdvdcss and bingo with VLC / KODI -- DVD is unlocked !! but to rip it you need something like AnyDVD. (You can of course play the physical DVD through VLC / KODI if you have a physical DVD reader though) !!!

    As an extra though you might be interested also in this (the other bway around from the original question) - CREATING DVD's as ISO's -- install on Linux the free program package Dvede.

    I use this sometimes to create DVD's from stuff I've downloaded / saved in mkv/mp4 format from SKY Q / Amazon / Netflix to take to people who don't have all the streaming services and still rely on physical DVD's etc.

    Thanks Dalchina but Handbrake does not decrypt which I should probably have mentioned.

    Thanks Jimbo. AnyDVD is shown as costing 87 Euros. I was hoping for something free. All the paid for apps are far too complex for my needs, with DVD cloning and multiple tools. All I need is a decryptor that outputs MP4.

    Following the link from Bree, I added the libdvdcss to Handbrake and it certainly opened the DVD and started copying to an m4v file. It is running as I type this. However the time to do this is stated as 2.5 hours which is almost the actual length of the movie. When I used DVDFab and WinXDVD the movie was copied in around 30 minutes. Is there any reason why Handbrake is taking so long. I have it set for maximum quality but so were the other 2 programes.

    Use DVDFab to decrypt and then use handbrake to encode it into the file format you want.

    I find Handbrake can be slow. I use the MPEG4 codec set to Constant quality 1 (Highest quality) which runs at about 4x real time (so that's two hours video in 30 minutes). This seems to be the fastest I can get Handbrake to run, then I compress the resulting large file using FFMpeg afterwards.

    @sydh -

    If you monitor this site on a daily basis, you just might get a licensed copy of WinXDvd for free.
    That I how I got it in the past - no free upgrades, though. You have to have patience, though.
