New TVs should be able to play mkv, you can try MakeMKV, I backup all my DVDs using it.
Key - MakeMKV is free while in beta - www.makemkv.com

Hi there
That program does work --it's been in Free beta for at least 3 years now !!! - I think though every so often you have to re-download and install.
The only problem with ripping this way you probably won't get the DVD menus / setup options / audio language streams and subtitles. However subtitles are easily obtainable in real time if you use KODI as the player and add the opensubtitle.org addin. (Or any other subtitle site you might prefer to use).
Cheers
