    foobar2000

I'm starting this thread, after recently re-installing the latest version of foobar2000 v1.5.1 for the first time in quite a while!

foobar2000 is an advanced freeware audio player for the Windows platform; there is also a comprehensive Store version and is also available on iOS and Android.
foobar is known for its highly modular design, breadth of features, and substantial user flexibility in configuration.

There is a wealth of information to be found at the foobar2000 Forums as well.

I am genuinely impressed with this feature rich audio player, all over again, and hope that other users, who utilize this software, will share their insights, discoveries and reviews, etc.

I wanted to give Foobar2000 a try but my patience of setting it up got the better of me.

Anyway I run JRiver Media Center which is often compared to Foobar2000 or vice versa. However JRiver is a paid program where, as noted, Foobar2000 is free. I also found JRiver much easier to setup and use. But, again, as noted Foobar2000's claim to fame is it's myriad of customizations.

All that said, I might revisit the software again for curiosity's sake.

    Hi there

Not sure what that has got to offer anymore compared to things like KODI and VLC - both of which can play DVD iso's directly etc etc.

However with all these things thank goodness there is a choice. For ripping CD's I'm still using the old venerable winamp -- still working perfectly on W10 and for classical music CD's the gracenote built in "tagger" is far better than a lot of the other tagging systems in other rippers.

    Cheers

I like the highly configurable, accessible and compact UI...

    Pro: disable OSD...

Con: won't open results from the Start Menu!

@Edwin, what media file format are you playing there? I rip my CD's using APE (Monkey's Audio) or sometimes flac.

    Hi folks

    @sygnus21

For CD's FLAC is fine -- for APE if you rip as one continuous file you can use CUETOOLS to re-split into tracks again so long as you have the .cue file from the rip as well as the APE file.

Actually one of the best CD rippers for this purpose --and automatically tags tracks too from a standard audio CD is the old fashioned WINAMP believe it or not -- the CD Audio ISO has the native format tracks xxx.cda etc.

Winamp will rip these xxx.cda tracks into "real tracks" and tag them - it uses the gracenote music db for getting the track titles from the CD identifier (in the CD iso / physical cd).

Any CD sort of program can copy a physical CD to an Audio iso CD --then just use the ripper to rip the"Virtual CD".

I was asking more for curiosity than advice. As stated I prefer APE, but also use flac. For "my ears" APE sounds a bit smoother and warmer than flac to me.

Anyway, I actually use dBpoweramp for my APE rips, though you'll need to free APE plugin for that. JRiver Media center actually supports encoding in both APE and flac, but I found dBpoweramp has better metadata and tagging support than JRiver. However, dBpoweramp is a paid program, but so is JRiver.

The only time I'd need to rip a CD as a continuous file is when I record a vinyl album to CD. But then I just split and edit the file in Sony's (Sound Forge) Audio Studio. I'll then create a clean CD with the individual tracks as recorded on album using Roxio (NZT) CD creator software. I'll also create an ISO as a master file, also using Roxio. That's me.

As a music collector I only buy physical media - CD's or vinyl so I rip my own music and encode in either APE or uncompressed flac.

    FLAC works for me.

You gotta be a serious collector to find the good stuff!

'FLIM & the BB's' were one of the first contemporary Jazz bands to made HIGH quality recordings; high FLAC rips - pure and awesome!!!
