File is open in another program

I share a folder on my network with firetv. I use it to watch movies on a tv.
If I watch a movie then in fire TV close the app I used to watch it. Then using my new upgraded win10 computer I can't move or delete that movie I watched says File is open in another program
    I didn't have this problem in win7.

Hi, if you use a free 3rd party program such as Emco Unlockit (very good as it does other things like delete on boot) or Lockhunter https://lockhunter.com/

you can rt click on the file and see what is locking (using) the file. This will give you more info and options.

    Here's Lockhunter:

You don't need any third party programs to close a program!

What you really need to figure out before running off and installing any third party programs is figure out what's preventing you from deleting the file. Another use for Task Manager as it will tell you what programs are running. Just click "Fewer details and you will see immediately what programs are open. From there, you should be able to figure out what's locking the movie.

    Let us know.

You are correct you don't need a 3rd party tool to close a program.

Question is, how do you easily identify that program, and then what is an easy way to deal with a file locked by a program. These tools make that easy - some might say 'a no brainer' - no need for tech advice as to how to find the program locking it

    @sygnus21
Please advise specifically how to identify quickly and easily the program responsible out of potentially a long listusing your approach. That step seems to be missing.

Task manager that Google Chrome and a VPN program are running.
To correct the problem I have to remove the share option from the file then restore the share
Why does this happen in Win10 and not Win7
I also tried Lockhunter and it found no processes or programs locking my file.
I found that If I unplug my fireTV and wait a few mins that I can then delete the file
But again using the same app on FireTV I didn't have this problem with Win7

Windows 10 is not Windows 7. So while some things worked great and were manufactured in Windows 7 hay-day, a lot of that hardware and software now needs to be coded to work with Windows 10.

With that I note there are different generations of Amazon's Fire TV so I'd imagine there are firmware updates and software updates and I can only suggest you look for those updates if available for your get stick.

That said, which generation of Fire TV do you have? The other question is why do you have a VPN running? Is that part of the Fire TV program???

I just purchased the FireTV 3 months ago its the 4K version. The VPN was open but not connected to a server (on my computer) where Im trying to delete the file. Could it be the app in FTV thats holding the file in memory some how

Could be; but lets go back VPN for a moment - if it's not being used it shouldn't be open or in use. What up with that?

The VPN dashboard was open on my desktop its where I can pick the server that I want to connect with it was open but i hadn't connected to any server.
I did however find a fix I think it has to do with the app that I was using to watch the movies on the Firestick. I tried another one and problem solved. So for some reason the file manager app on FireTV was keeping the movie file locked
