My notepad text showing weird symbols and characters

    Hi,
Please can you help me, I suffered from a virus attack and my computer is no longer behaving properly! Microsoft Office won't open and I had some backups made by Macrium Reflect which look like they are corrupt and the icon of the backup has changed to notepad and when I want to restore, Macrium no longer recongnised them. The main thing is my important notepad text files, which were kept on a separate drive, have changed to some weird charaters as well! Is there anyway I can convert them back to my original text?

    Thank you!

Which font is set? Click on Format / Font and select Consolas or similar.

I usually have to first Select the text to be changed before going to Format.

What program alerted you to the virus attack and what was the "name" of the virus?

Sorry that this turned out in encryption malware.

When i wrote my first reply , there was not any reference to malware, and that reply looks silly now...

Follow the procedure described in your link, and I hope you have some backups offline (disconnected from computer) - always keep a copy of backup that is not connected to your computer.

There is still some possibility to recover your files, couple of them are described in your link. Just don't perform any destructive actions yet. Other way could be to wait (not with infected computer, but make an Image of your system again), sometimes those private key can be obtained after some time..
