    MP3 Tagging software recommendations

Hello. I used Tag&Rename for mp3 tagging in the past but this program doesn't appear to have been updated in quite some time so I think I will move on to more current software. It seems like mp3Tag, Tag Scanner and Metotogger are the popular tagging programs now. Any specific pros/cons or reasons one is better? Thanks!

Here is the free software I used to sort out the MP3 tags for my Mazda's USB music playback which is very fussy about formats:

    1. Tagscanner TagScanner - The Ultimate Tag Editor to check and edit the MP3 file metadata.
    2. MP3Test Willkommen auf Shivan's Homepage to quickly check and test for MP3 file errors. Correct any simple errors using Tagscanner above.
    3. MP3Diags MP3 Diags to perform a detailed check of MP3 files and correct errors. This program has a learning curve and some experience to use.

    Hi there

IMO by far the best one is MP3tag --does flac and a whole slew of other stuff -- 100% free - can also rename, re-order etc etc etc.

    Mp3tag - Download

For linux users puddletag is similar (mp3tag though still better if you are on Windows)

    Home — puddletag

I'm on Linux at the moment so here's a screenshot of puddletag (very similar to mp3tag on Windows) -- note though I'm using a Linux Dark theme - background is normally in white etc if using standard themes). I've tagged a "Handel" classical music CD here.

mp3tag has an extra feature though that puddletag doesn't -- you can capture the output into an EXCEL spreadsheet, text file, csv or whatever. However missing that feature isn't a showstopper for me.

    Cheers

I've used mp3tag for at least 15 years---nearly every day---to manicure tens of thousands of songs.

There's a moderate learning curve to it.

I use it primarily to force the tag to match the file name. I name all mp3s with a certain protocol and want that protocol to be carried over to the tag. Of course, the program is pretty flexible and you can adapt it to your needs.

I'm using an older version (2.82 from 2017) without issues.

Here's a screenshot as I use it. I almost never use any of those buttons. Just the File, Edit, Convert, and occasionally the Action menu (to change case from lower to upper). The Convert menu can be used to force the tag to match the file name, or vice versa).

I use the options inside my Music Manage/Player/ Etc - MediaMonkey I have the full "gold" version that gives a few extras, but even the Basic system is good enough for most things

Yes if you are just looking for a small utility this is sheer overkill, but if you have thousands of tracks or albums digitized this will grab most tag data automatically give you access to the complete range of Tags (it does Video Too) and I use it to create an album set where all the tracks are tagged and then renamed and filed in their own album folder, using my own naming system automatically

Plus of course it plays the tracks too - can even make virtual albums ( leaving the original albums as is) so you can then burn to USB or Phone or CD (remember them )

MP3tag on Windows and Puddletag on Linux are indeed excellent choices

I have also been using Mp3tag for more than 10 years and works flawlessly!
You can download either its desktop version or install the UWP one from the Microsoft Store.
They both have the same functionality and work as supposed to.
