    OK. I have it working.

You need to ensure that the correct .mui files are in the appropriate sub-folders.

It would be great to find a SnippingTool.exe version that doesn't have the "Snipping Tool Is Moving" warning.

I don't know what version of Windows 10 it was prior to the warning.

@Stigg: the blog post is still available as a direct link, thank goodness. Otherwise, I'd have had to figure out how to find in in The Wayback Machine. This should work for you: it just worked for me.

PS: TechTarget shut down all of its blogs and supporting infrastructure in late 2019/early 2020. I had been writing for them for 11 years when they cut it off, saying only "doesn't generate enough traffic. Gone!" Came as a rude shock to me...

Yes, that's essential for all such old apps you want to keep, MS Paint, for example.

That would be 1803. The 'moving' message first appeared in 1809, though as I recall it was after a CU. A clean install of 1809 may not have it until it gets its updates.

I still have Snipping Tool available in my Win11 build 22000.184. Snip & Sketch never really caught on. MS seem to have realised that now, and plan to remove it from W11. The planned replacement will be called Snipping Tool. It seems to be much like the old snipping tool with some of the better parts of Snip & Sketch added. It has yet to arrive on my W11 machine...

If you still have a link for it (or can Google for someone who has posted a link) then go to archive.org and paste the url in the search box...

Yes. That screenshot was taken from my test machine's Macrium image of 1803 (x86) running as a VM using Macrium viBoot. My test machine has system images of every version of W10 from 1507 up to 21H1.

But you don't need a working install of any particular build to get hold of SnippingTool.exe and its .mui. If you have the ISO for that build and also have 7-Zip, then you can open the install.wim or install.esd with 7-Zip File Manager and copy it from there.

And it's easy enough to get the old ISOs, options 5 or 6 here...

    Download Windows 10 ISO File

...or use the MediaCreationTool Wrapper to run any version of the MCT to build an older ISO.

Universal MediaCreationTool wrapper for all MCT Windows 10 versions from 1507 to 21H1 with business (Enterprise) edition support . GitHub
