Force One Program To Run Behind Another

I currently have Cortana set up to operate Kodi which works great, but after each command i have to tell it to close the window, it displays an error message and often displays in fullscreen, all of which is very clunky.

I'm looking for a way to force Cortana to always run behind Kodi, so that all this stuff is hidden, the opposite to always on top, but can't find a solution. How can i achieve this?

Hi, you could use Autohotkey (free) to write a quite simple script that uses the winset command (second example - Bottom- here):

Also note the key combo ALT ESC sets the current Window behind others.

Cheers, but the trouble is alt + esc doesn’t minimise a Cortana window.

Then you could try the script approach... which might work better for Kodi (setting it on top) than for Cortana

Note the Cortana popup -SearchUI.exe- (which I guess you're referring to at least in part) is probably not a 'proper' window, so may not follow the normal rules.

There are other ways to get programs to run on top... some of the things you may find to do that being obsolete.

Just for clarification, it sounds like as per my gut feeling that it's not possible to hide it?

It's not the end of the world, the skill is very cool, it would just make it cooler!

    I quickly tried
    WinSet, Bottom, , ahk_exe SearchUI.exe
    but it had no effect.

It does on wordpad.exe for example.

Unfortunately setting a Window 'on top' still leaves Cortana in the foreground... it's clearly designed that way.

You're welcome.. there's also Windows Speech recognition you could play with- recognises more commands to manipulate windows and type text etc.. try

    Hey Cortana open speech recognition

    Unlike Cortana it recognises 'Close'
