Any Help For a Python Error?

I just had to put my third or fourth new win10 install on this machine and now I'm into the usual hassles: much of my software won't run.

In this instance it is powershell in admin mode running youtube-dl.

It is in the user path. I can't edit the system vars, don't know why, they're greyed out.

I get this error in powershell:

    PS C:\Windows\system32> youtube-dl
Fatal Python error: Py_Initialize: unable to load the file system codec
    ImportError: No module named 'encodings'

I just downloaded and installed the latest version of Python. Hasn't helped.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong?

    :)

You might need an older version for some software to run. You can have more than one version of Python installed.
I have to install v2.7 to use PyTivo.

This would not be a a windows issue, so do not be quick to blame. Youtube-dl has had ongoing Python error’s since the beginning. Issues . ytdl-org/youtube-dl . GitHub Call it bad coding and the fact that Google aka Alphabet along with the video owners are doing everything they can to combat this kind of piracy.

Ahh... old version... I'll try it, thanks.

and 'piracy' ? perhaps I wouldn't be so quick to judge. I find it a better downloader for items that are available for download as it stands.....

Perhaps you could try 4K video downloader as an alternative.Never had a problem with youtube or win10.

thanks, okay, I'll give it a go because that old version of python hasn't helped...

it's funny. i have another computer running win10 and completely up to date, I think - and I put this one up brand new so therefore also up to date - and this one won't work with VLC and has python errors and the other one is fine.

I've had continuing hassles with this particular computer for about two years now. I just can't understand it. Seems unreal to me.

Maybe it is time to do a clean install of Windows. youtube-dl lacks an easy way to download best 4K format, adding sound and converting to mp4 . Issue #15593 . ytdl-org/youtube-dl . GitHub Really cannot tell you which programs are out there for 4k video offline viewing, you will have to do that search if you wish.

Have a look at your Reliability History and see if it give any clues as to the cause of the problems. Two years is quite a long time to put up with problems of any kind.Perhaps you could start by eliminating Win10 issues with a clean install as suggested, then a methodical check of hardware, one at a time.

Yes, I just put up this new install three days ago. On a totally new WD disk. It is all brand new.

I fixed the python thing with help from the python forum. No, it wasn't a windows thing.

    Thanks for the help.
