Is there a way with Windows Explorer or some other tool that I can rearrange the menu items and put them in folders other than the way that takes forever getting everything approved every step and the menu closing behind you and clicking start all over again?
You can rt click a folder displayed in the start menu, click Open, or Open all users, and that folder will be displayed in file explorer. You can then manipulate things there.
Be careful to make sure both are consistent, where entries for both the current user and all users exist.
You hit it out of the park! I remembered doing it this way before, which is why I thought to ask, but then I thought it must have been with some other shell. You saved me bushels of time.
But even if I don't get it right, I believe the only downside is it shows up two different places on the menu, correct?

Correct. All you're doing is moving shortcuts around between folders, or folders of shortcuts.
I have mine categorised as Internet, Utilities, Multimedia\Photo, Video, Audio; Maintenance etc
Drag n 'drop also sometimes works without the menu closing or any further prompt.
I had Classic Shell 4.3.1 which was last stable version.I went to Github site and the latest release stated is 4.4.142...so i downloaded it ( uninstalled 4.3.1 first) and installed it...when i restarted my pc...it was exactly the same as 4.3.1..!....
There was no settings to apply at all ...Since it was a fresh install i would have thought you would have re-apply personal settings again to your own personal preferences..I had to do nothing....totally mystified.
i don't know what 4.4.140 is and when i download this first my internet security blocked it a suspicious program but it did not block version 4.4.142 from Github which installed correctly.
Any way 4.4.142 is working fine and ran my internet security suite and results ok.
To help de-mystify a bit.....
Your Classic Shell 4.3.1, as you know, was the last version by the original author, Ivo. A group of Github open source guys took over the project and renamed it Open Shell. On the surface it is virtually identical to Classic Shell, but some of the guts were reworked to be more compatible with newer Windows code. 4.4.142 Open Shell is the latest stable in that project.
Now, the settings.....
If you uninstalled it the conventional way, thru Programs and Features or the Uninstall provided, you removed the app code only. All the settings remained. This is not bad, not wrong. When you installed Open Shell 4.4.142, it simply picked up and used the existing settings. Just like it's supposed to. All is fine. Hope this helps....
