Not sure what you mean: I always choose keep programs and data, whereupon I start seeing the "Working on" pages. What I did not see today, for the first time in this overly-numerous attempts was the the "Installing %" screens and until today, I had never gotten to the "Working on" pages.

I am unclear as to what setting up screens you refer to (along with quite a few other lack-of-clarity matters...).

You mentioned you had to reinstall some programs- which with the set up screens 'Hi...'' made me wonder if you'd not selected the keep everything option.

If it's all working, great... and remember, it's almost never too soon to create a new base disk image (Macrium Reflect (free)+ external storage for image files e.g.) so you can restore your system from that if necessary. Then thereafter periodically create a new differential image (smaller, faster) periodically or after a reasonable amount of change.

If you'd had such an image, you could have restored that to recover your PC.

Please note that, following your advice, it was my removing Comodo Firewall that finally allowed the ISO to run correctly. I had also removed Powerchute and Snagit, which, as I had mentioned, were the only two programs reinstalled after the problems started; as both of them were causing difficulties, I removed them before even trying to update Windows. As far as I know, everything that was there before the successful in-place Windows 10 installation was there after the install took place.

I seriously doubt that Macrium Reflect could have allowed a recovery, as all the problems I was finding pointed to a corrupt Windows, which I am certain happened when, during the download of this month's monthly Windows update, my WiFi began to misbehave; by the time I had fixed that, Windows Update had become totally confused, trying without any success to even find updates, and that, in turn, led to my having to take drastic action which likely eventuated in the corruption. (End of overly-long sentence.)

You're correct that if the problem occurred long ago then disk imaging isn't a magic fix-all solution.
But that doesn't invalidate using imaging. Most members here do.

Macrium runs every day, creates a full backup weekly, but by the time I finally figured out that Windows was corrupt, I thought that it would be a simple matter to do an in-place update, and perhaps more complex to do a Macrium reinstall and then a Macrium update of changes since the full backup. Certainly did not turn out that way.
