App is listed in registry open with list but is not displayed w/rt clk

Luminar is a photo editing program. It installed with no problems and opens fine when I open it via the start menu but I want it to open via the "open with" context menu item such that the photo I clicked on is displayed and ready to edit.

I have successfully added the Luminar program to the registry "open with" list for .JPG files. However, when I select "open with" on a JPG file Luminar is not displayed in the list of programs but it IS displayed if I select the "choose another app" option and works properly such that Luminar opens with the selected file.

I have googled 'till I'm blue in the face but none of the returned items address this specific scenario.

Can anyone explain how to fix this problem...I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks for responding.

I already tried the Registering programs with the "Open With" dialog link but was unable to register because the app file display did not offer the c:\program files folder where Luminar is installed, only the c:\program files (x86) folder.
I've also tried the methods in the tutorial but that makes Luminar the default program when I double click a jpg file - I have that set to a viewer for all files and just want Luminar to be visible on the open with menu which I'll select when I need to edit rather that just look at the picture. I hope that makes sense...

    Try pasting the path instead.

I manually entered the path and followed the procedure but rather than putting Luminar in the open with menu it instead fixed things such that I can't even manually open Luminar any longer.

In that case try reinstalling Luminar. Also do you have Winzip installed? That has been causing some problems lately.

If reinstalling Luminar doesn't help check registry here:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ FileExts \ .FileExtension \ OpenWithList

I went ahead and restored my system to an image I made a couple days ago to make things easier and eliminate any glitches I might have introduced while troubleshooting but in any event Luminar has never showed up in the open with menu.

Things are now running as they always have - no Luminar on the open with menu and I had decided to keep at it this time until it worked properly and had posted the problem on tenforums when I still couldn't find anything wrong.

Anyhow I went back to the relevant registry keys for the umpteenth time this go-around and still could not find anything "mechanically" wrong - it should be working.

This time however, I did notice a tiny difference between the Luminar data and any other keys that I have looked at - I'm grasping at straws here - the executable filename has a space in it: Luminar 3.exe. Is there a remote chance this might be causing the problem?

If not I will conclude that I have met my Waterloo and live annoyingly with the current situation until the next Luminar release. I will also contact the Luminar developers to see if they can shed any light on the situation.

    Thanks again for your help.

The space isn't a problem. I notice that it the program only runs on 64bit systems so maybe it could be something to do with that.

I have used this a few times:

    Download Default Programs Editor 2.7.2676.2142

You could try it I suppose. Right click and run as administrator. You'd need to navigate the options like this:

App is listed in registry open with list but is not displayed w/rt clk-dpe.jpg

App is listed in registry open with list but is not displayed w/rt clk-dpe1.jpg

App is listed in registry open with list but is not displayed w/rt clk-dpe2.jpg

Right, I tried a few of the context editors but none seemed to work but I don't remember if Default progam editor was one of them...I'll give it a try. The biggest problem I had while googling for info is most people don't seem to understand the difference between what we are discussing here and a windows default editor which will always open the same app.

I have five different photo editors each one being able to do something better than another or being capable of performing some task that another can't. "open with" makes it possible to simply select a file and quickly choose whichever tool is best for the job at hand.

The links you provided were very informative...thanks.
