Does the old file associations menu still exist?

I'm on 1803 and had to clear some file associations manually the other day via the registry. I was unable to find the old Control Panel-based default programs menu. Is there any way to access the old menu?

The file association settings offered by the Settings menu is crippled, to put it mildly. It would be nice if when they deprecate Control Panel menus, they would do so only after the corresponding Settings page is feature-complete.

What I'm missing is shown in the screenshot at the top, and at least USED to be part of WIndows 10: Set or Change File Associations & Extensions in Windows 10/8/7

I'm afraid not. Those Control Panel items were at first hidden from view in 1709 (though they could still be accessed if you knew the right shell commands). Starting with 1803 they were removed completely, even the shell commands would divert to the Settings app.

Setting File Associations - Another Step Backwards

This File Types Manager from Nirsoft is a free utility that you may find more useful than the Settings app.

Ugh... The future seems grim. Thanks for the info. I will have to use that or Types, a similar application. Manually dealing with this through the registry is tedious.

I'm fine using third party software for this (as I was managing it manually in the registry before), but I just want to point out the functionality lost in the menu in the above screenshots is the ability to clear an extension's association.

In case anyone wonders why I would want to do that, it's not helpful having a default program assigned to an extension representative of myriad unrelated formats, such as .sav. A lot of developers use the .sav extension to refer to their own game's unique save game format. Some .sav files are editable, but .sav files between different games will obviously not be editable by the same program as they are of a different format entirely and only share the superficial .sav extension in common. I use "Open with..." with such an extension, so in this case I cleared the association so that a program wouldn't launch if I accidentally double-click on an unrelated .sav file.

Sure, or via the registry. But the GUI option for this functionality is lost, and the possibility unexposed to most users. A regression in the name of modern UI aesthetics. :/

This is another fine example of baby MS software engineers screwing up a previously very useful feature.
